Recommend me some RPG Maker games!
« on: August 12, 2015, 10:29:28 AM »
I'm working on a big article about RPG Maker and games made with it. While I've got a little list of interesting games, I'm certain there are amazing things out there I've never heard of. Since you're all awesome people who know things, could you help a fellow forum member out?

Some of the games that may make their way into the article:
Corpse Party
To The Moon
Labyrinthine Dreams
Last Dream
Eternal Eden
Skyborn
Always Sometimes Monsters
Off (heard good things about its weirdness, but haven't played it yet)
Yume Nikki (another one on my 'to play' list)
Millennium series (not very familiair with Aldorlea's stuff, have they made something more noteworthy?)

Enjoy

Some of the classic, "amateur" RPGMaker games:

The Way
A Blurred line
Love and War: Act 1
Alter A.I.L.A.

Disclaimer: I haven't played through all of these, but they are highly praised by the amateur RPGMaker community.

There's too many to name rally, so dig around. There's a lot of stinkers but the gems often get high ratings. Mess about with the filters and you're bound to find quite a few interesting games up there.

To The Moon and Eternal Eden are my favorites.  The Millennium series is good too.

Others worth a shot are Whisper of a Rose (by Rose Portal Games) and Skyborn (by Dancing Dragon Games).  It's also worth mentioning the Aveyond series by Amaranthia, since those were the first commercially produced RPGM games and Aveyond 3 had some cool innovations like voiceovers.

Master of the Wind. The gameplay's your usual RPG fare, but the story easily rivals the best commercial offerings, and I think it's even better than some of them in certain ways.

The Sacred Tears TRUE
http://store.steampowered.com/app/316840/
Bizarre battle system and good storytelling.

Embric of Wulfhammer's Castle (WARNING! 18+ due to sexuality)
http://aeresland.net/ (Free + Get the DELUXE version)
I'm not really sure how to sell this one.
It's mostly comical but the plot is actually very deep.
You basically have to replay New Games + to keep uncovering more and more.
There is some sexual content (not really graphic)

Skyborn (by Dancing Dragon Games).

Whoops, yeah, played that one. Was on my list, but I had a little brainfart and mangled the title. Fixed now.

Thanks for reminding me. Played it and it's list worthy. Western made RPG Maker games are easier to find than raindrops in autumn, so I want to include a few Japanese examples as well.

Hm, I don't tink 18+ will get me into trouble. I'll have a look.

I saw this topic and thought "man, I hope Dincrest has weighed in on this."  He knows more about RPG Maker games than anybody I know.  (So I'm glad he did weigh in.)

I was going recommend this but bailed due to the sexual content. There really isn't anything quite like it.

Space Funeral
She Who Fights Monsters
Desert Nightmare
Schuld
The Witch House
Mad Father

Oh yeah and also Ib but you probably know that one already.

I mostly pop in occasionally to give my two cents on certain controversial things, so if you disagree then send a PM, because I generally don't check for replies in threads in case I feel like replying and then things get heated/derailed.

Ghost Suburb 2 was one of my favorite games from last year. It's worth checking out Moga's other games, too. She is a very neat creator.

I'm going to leave this here: http://vgperson.com/games/

Ha ha, I was initially coming here to post vgperson's site! Last year I actually did some voice-acting for "The Boogie Man", the follow-up to "The Sandman". So please watch for that, whenever it comes out!

Seconding Space Funeral - also look into Artifact Adventure on Steam. OFF is a classic, too, and highly recommended.

I also make RPG Maker games - I just did one for a jam and posted it to the itch account in my signature : )

Oh hey, you did GraveCamp? I saw that on Warpdoor's tumblr and I've been meaning to try that out! Very striking use of colors.

I noticed you have a strong affinity for the GB aesthetic; have you played Wither?

Haha whoa can you link me to Warpdoor - I've never come across it.

I did GraveCamp for this year's IGMC, in one month -_- If you play it, please, let me know how it went! I was fixing bugs right up until the submission deadline...!

Yeah, Wither is great! My favorite part are the worm animations. It's like playing through a poem.

I've been thinking and talking a lot about GB graphics and sound lately. The color palette I used is from one of those old Super Game Boy palettes that I think are just perfect. I always keep up a Super Game Boy color swatch open in GIMP, and an NES one, though I really want to make a game using ZX Spectrum colors, without it looking quite like Moonside or something.

Here ya go! I'll be sure to let you know what I think when I have time to sit down with it.

I too have a great deal of fondness for limited 8-bit color palettes. I'd like to work within them but I need to brush up on my pixel art skills first, which are...pretty lacking.
