Final Fantasy X HD Remaster OST
« on: September 01, 2015, 06:31:11 PM »
I was hoping there would be a post on this album already so I would have a place to "rant" but alas I have to create one myself. I was expecting it to be great but they honestly George Lucas'd the whole album, songs that were intentionally sparse have become over-produced, songs that had cool rhythms are buried under new instrumentation and now I have no interest in playing the game even though there's all that new content I missed because it was cut in the US version of the game. I know one of the reviewers for this website gave it a glowing review (one of the main reasons I picked it up) but I am needless to say disappointed. Am I alone on this, am I just feeling the FFX nostalgia or does it sound worse to others?

I have mixed feelings about the album. Some tracks I feel we're better in the original and some are better in the remix. I find that some of the original songs I like in game better but when I have my headphones on I like some of the new arrangements better. Nostalgia definitely has something to do with it as the scenes I remember are tied to the sounds and instrumentation of the original tracks. I think it's a matter of taste and how much you've played the original. I'm grateful that the ps4 version allows for the switch.

I'm in agreement. I really, really love some of the songs in this version (Besaid Island, Memories in Green), but I agree that some of them now have a different tone than originally. It's interesting that the team chose to go that route, and the mixed results make me glad that the KH2.5 OST took the route it did.

So you CAN switch to the old OST? I did not know that but it makes me more inclined to give the HD remaster a try in the future.

The KH remastered OST were unreal.  The right instruments were tuned up to give a richer feel.  I wouldn't be surprised if this was, in part, due to Shimomura being so close to the series since...always.

The FFX HD OST was really lacking, used unnecessary flourishes where it didn't have to, and at times changed the mood to something audiences weren't used to (something the KH OST avoided all together if I recall).

I don't mind the new FFX tracks, and I was happy to give them a shot, but if I had to pick I'd definitely go with the old OST.

Now, the OTHER big conversation topic here are people's thoughts on the FFX-2 OST! :D

So you CAN switch to the old OST? I did not know that but it makes me more inclined to give the HD remaster a try in the future.

IIRC, PS4 ver. exclusive option. ;/

I'm in total agreement with Stephen and Steph. Although I think the FFXHD OST is great and suits it, there's something very special about the original. There are very few tracks on the HD OST  that I prefer over the original. Now, the KH 2.5 (1.5 is great too) soundtrack on the other hand...

I am probably one of the 5 people in the world that LOVE the ffx-2 soundtrack. I can go into why if you'd like but I'm not at liberty to type long passages at the moment

I'd love to hear why. I think it has some charming music on it. It's a bit rougher than, say, FFX (IMO), but I do like the music in X-2

I'm glad everyone's in agreement at how glorious KH2.5 was. It's one of the (many) reasons I'm so excited for FFXV's OST. Seems like it's going to mostly be the same combo of Shimomura and the VGO, and I'm A-OK with that.

Ok so here it goes.... I originally hated the ffx2 soundtrack. I couldn't understand the style and drastic change. As the years went on it started to grow on me so one summer I had and iPod shuffle with nothing but ffx2 and ff12 on it. I listened to it and listened to it. I started to understand the music and what they were going for.

One of the things I love about vgm is its ability to force me to listen to genres I wouldn't normally even think about. The "lizard lounge " Jazz style of ffx2 was so new to me I just wrote it off. The more I listened, the more I heard the complexity of the arrangements. I followed each instrument in the constantly moving melody and found so much to love. The different sounds and instruments coupled with the relation to the game just hit me and I never looked back. I loved hearing something new in each jazz track and hearing glimpses of different character themes.

Next is the area themes. The way each theme was composed was to evoke the spirit of the original but convey the change in the world and hope for the future. Gagazet still sounds like mountain people but with a little more joy and liveliness. Besaid maintains the island feel but adds the rhythmic percussion that to me adds a hint of celebration.  The forlorn and simple sounds of the farplane get me every time. 1000 years was the first vocal track from a final fantasy game to really move me in the moment. The score manages to get the gravitas of what came before and add the lightheartedness of the adventure.

Like I said I know I am in the minority but I just love it.

I can totally dig it. VGM has also introduced me to (and helped me listen to) a lot of genres I otherwise wouldn't hear on my own. I've also been there before where you eventually come around on an OST-- that's how I feel about Phantasy Star III. A whole lot of people hate the sound in that game, but after listening to it so much, I've sort of come BACK around on it, hah!

FFX-2 was a huge departure from the main series but it had a lot going for it including the music. I'm so glad they re-released the OST (in a better quality format no less). Some of the songs are a little too J-Popish for me but the soundtrack on whole is catchy, complex and just plain fun. I was a fan of the game too although the 100% ending is IMO not the real ending to me personally.

Would it blow your mind to know that Yuna was dead the whole time. She sacrificed herself to defeat sin and the end of X along with X-2 were all Yuna's Dream. And she is also Ultimecia.  😄

Is that one of those game theories, like that one I read about years ago for FF8? The one that states that after disc 1 once the Sorceress impales Squall with an icicle everything after that is a dream/life flashing before ones eyes/heaven or something like that.
