RPG Boss Dialogue Appreciation Thread
« on: September 17, 2015, 03:21:09 PM »
Thought I'd start this. I've always loved the insane JRPG dialogue before boss battles, especially final bosses. Screenshots welcome :)

Dragon Warrior

Full text:

Dragonlord: Welcome, Hero. I am the Dragonlord--King
of Kings. I have been waiting long for one such as thee. I
give thee now a chance to share this world and to rule
half of it if thou will now stand beside me. What sayest
thou? Will the great warrior stand with me? (Yes/No)
Dragonlord (if you say ‘Yes’): Really? (Yes/No)
Dragonlord (if you say ‘Yes’): Then half of this
world is thine, half of the darkness, and.... If thou
dies I can bring thee back for another attempt
without loss of thy deeds to date. Thy journey is
over. Take now a long, long rest. Hahahaha.... (Gameover)
Dragonlord (if you say ‘No’): Thou art a fool!

What a joke from both Dragonlord & the developers being played on the player here. It's hilarious, and one of my favorite final boss tropes. The faux ye olde language just makes the scene even crazier - I absolutely love the idea of Akira Toriyama characters in this miasma plagued JRPG world babbling "old English."

I can never forget the classic Kefka line saying everyone sounds like chapters from a self-help book.  I don't remember all that much pre-final battle boss lines, so I'll have to try and recall some more.

This one's from Symphony of the Night. It's not a final boss dialogue, but the first post does say 'boss dialogue', not 'final boss dialogue'. So there. :P

Quote
Richter Belmont: Die, monster! You don't belong in this world!
Dracula: It was not by my hand that I am once again given flesh. I was called here by humans, who wished to pay me tribute!
Richter: Tribute!?! You steal men's souls and make them your slaves!
Dracula: Perhaps the same could be said of all religions.
Richter: Your words are as empty as your soul! Mankind ill needs a savior such as you!
Dracula: What is a man?! A miserable little pile of secrets! But enough talk, HAVE AT YOU!!!

You perv. x)
Honestly, I'm more impressed you hard much at all.  I can barely understand what any of the Wisemen say.

I always liked Mithos from Tales of Symphonia.  A lot of bosses often feature some sort of remorse, apology, or simply go out with a bang and that's that.  Mithos' final words weren't bad mainly due to the lack of any regret or remorse and wishes to die because he'd never truly "yield" otherwise...(and, more frankly, they're the only one that ever stuck out enough to kinda remember):

Farewell, my shadow. You who stand at the end of the path I chose not to follow. I wanted my own world, so I don’t regret my choice. I
would make the same choice all over again. I will continue to choose this path!

Taking things passed the scope of the topic, I was just casually watching FF8's ending, and I've always been wonderfully creeped out by the fraction of a second flash of Squall without a face.  It's creepy, it works, and the small hark back to Ultemicia's final form is great fodder for people who theorize on that stuff.

And finally, as far as non-gaming examples, because I wanna go there, I always love how dignified "the Dark Lord" goes in the anime "The Slayers"

Speaking of Tales games.

Asche vs. Luke is probably my favorite boss speech, as hammy as it may be.

"We're going to find out who's stronger... who the 'real' Luke is!"

And referencing my P3 Game Journal, that battle is another great example of a battle version of a non-battle theme.

(speaking of which, are you ever going to update the vgm thread, Dice?)

Not sure if it qualifies, but in Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete I find Royce's "I saved this just for you!" and Ghaleon's "Time...to...die!" in their respective battles to be badass.

Oh man, if we're including in-battle quotes from bosses as well I *HAVE TO* mention the Avatar battle with Atoli in .Hack//GU

"HASEO LOOK AT ME!!"

*successful dodge*

"NOBODY EVER LOOKS AT ME!!"

*all the feels*

That sequence is great just because of the sort-of mind fuck it puts you through.

I think it's tragic enough letting the whole "non-original" be the hero --- in this case, Luke is the hero of what should be "Asch's story", but a few films have pulled this twist.  I think the added kicker is that Asch is a huge behind-the-scenes player --- he kinda does get robbed a good story while "the fake" lives it up way better.
And yeah I should update that.

And while not of final boss material (and in fact was merely a message posted by a reoccurring boss)...

Lunar the Silver Star Sega CD  Ghaleon
Ghaleon's VA really hammed it up, especially for  the 2nd fight.

My favorite boss quote in general is  Luca Blight's death speech from Suikoden II.

Just going to add the mandatory Viktor threatens Dracula from Suikoden II:

Might think up something more, but I'm really bad at remembering stuff when THINGS ARE GETTING ON. Logic says those are the things that stick to memory, but for some reason I have easier time remembering something like a random NPC going to spend his savings before the meteor hits.

Oh man, how could I forget this fantastic pre-boss battle exchange.  I even talked about it elsewhere earlier.  Thousand Arms, before fighting Ratchet, my favorite JRPG cat-fight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SANRhLOWjg

That game, in general, had some great boss dialogue encounters.

Of course, I'll mention Valkyrie Profile 2's final boss, Lezard Valeth.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJhP10gX5cg

So many great lines

"Know that thou are truly fortunate, you are able to witness the birth of a new god!"

"Soon Lenneth Vlakyrie and I will become as one. You shall be witness to this marvelous happening. And once the deed is done, i shall destroy you all."

"Pitiable fools, does your folly never end? Very well, you are the first blasphemers to defy the new god. You shall burn in the fires of Hel for all eternity!"

"Lenneth Valkyrie, whom I sought, is no more. And it was you who killed her. ITS WAS YOOOOOUUUUU!

""If you stood with me you could rule the world under me. Why? Why do you oppose me?"

"I grant you the rights accorded to an enemy of the gods. You will live from now and forever, in an endless cycle of rebirth. Condemned in each life to be hated, feared, scorned, punished, and obliterated."

And, of course, who could forget THAT insane laugh:

Liam O'Brien is an amazing voice actor.
