After the documentary came out in 2013, "Kingdom of Madness of Dreams" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3204392/... people thought Studio Ghibli was putting down their beautiful water color palettes and brushes. See trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxI9WmgqWWU.

Previous reports about the company being financial insolvent were wrote about here:

Also previously this year, Miyazaki came out of retirement again to work on his first 3D short animation (10 minutes):

Now a new report came out today on Kotaku http://kotaku.com/studio-ghibli-is-making-a-new-animated-movie-well-sor-1747869925 saying they may not be closing down just yet. They're working on a new working on a co-producing title, "The Red Turtle." Not much is known yet, but they did promote this image:

Who knows how it will turn out. I have noticed that the last few movies From Up on Poppy Hill and The Wind Rises have been more "adult/mature" theme oriented dealing with adolescence, relationships and war themes and an overall melancholy overtone. They seem to be steering away from the great fantasy flicks of the 80s like Castle in the Sky or Nausicaa, but maybe "The Red Turtle" will stir something.

Holy shit it doesn't star a young boy and a young girl who look like every other ghibli character (or it does but a beard is covering it up).

Cool I guess.  Haven't been 'in love' with a lot of their stuff lately, but I'll definitely be keeping my ears open for whatever news pops up.

That's a big reason why I really enjoyed The Wind Rises.  It was really different from your average Ghibli movie, particularly the protagonist who made me think a lot about my dad.  (That's why I'm hesitant to watch that film again at this point.)
