I'm unsure.

It was either VHS stuff like "Macron-1" and "Serendipity the Pink Dragon" (which was pretty trippy for a 5/6 year old)

Or it was Robotech. I only caught a few episodes, but apparently most of them were character death scenes that stuck with me ever since.

Then came the Toonami triple-whammy of Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, and Gundam Wing, and the rest is history.

Star Blazers in the early 80s. Still one of my favorite shows.

I used to get up super early to watch it at 6am during the whole "Saturday Morning Cartoons" era.

Dragon Quest had an anime? And it was released in America?

Wow, I'm impressed.

Have you ever checked out Space Battleship Yamato 2199? (Also known as "Starblazers 2199," if you're interested in paying out the wazzoo for the DVD volumes) That has to be the best modernized update of a classic I've seen in ages.
