Ok so Vandal Hearts and FF Tactics (not the advanced version haha) seem to be safe bets. I'll give them a try. Thanks for the feedback.

I thought Vandal Hearts could be quite pretty honestly at times.

I mostly remember the blood fountains and the large noses... and the ugly colour scheme... the primitive magic effects...

But it was my first SRPG and it did teach me how to play and appreciate the genre. It doesn't throw too many mechanics at you but does feature a good variety of mission objectives and challenges that go beyond 'kill things efficiently'. Only thing that bothered me is that's easy to under or overlevel certain characters if you don't watch out.

Flames of Judgement at least attempted to make the butt ugly PSX games a tad less wretched looking.  I remember enjoying it more because it wasn't such an assault on my senses.

I'm not big into SRPGs, so a lot of the highly praised ones, like Disgaea, I couldn't get into.  I've tried a few Disgaea games and Soul Nomad and I discovered that NIS SRPGs aren't my cup of tea.

One of my recent favorites is Summon Night 5.  I also really enjoyed Wild ARMs XF and Fire Emblem: Awakenings.  For PSX, I enjoyed Kartia and Vanguard Bandits. I wouldn't say any of those are easy, but considering I'm not an SRPG guy it says something that I enjoyed those games.

I reviewed Summon Night 5 and Wild ARMs XF favorably on the site.

The classic Shining Force games kick butt too, and 1 & 2 can be found on Sonic's Genesis Collection for PS3.

Honestly, if the OP isn't going to start with Final Fantasy Tactics, he should just jump right into Fire Emblem Fates.  The "light" story won't be a problem for him and the mechanics are darn near flawless.  Not only that, but it has a ton of difficulty options, so it's great for someone who feels intimidated by the genre.  It's honestly the perfect choice for a first SRPG.

Fire Emblem Awakening is definitely one of my all-time favorite tactical RPGs, so maybe that.

If you've got a Wii or a GameCube, I'd also recommend Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance or Radiant Dawn. Probably two of the more forgiving entries in FE, while still maintaining the permadeath stuff.

For a first SRPG though, Path of Radiance is a bit hardcore, and Awakening's mechanics are worse than Fates' in every category.

If OP wants a better story, though, Awakening will do just fine as a first SRPG.

Gotta say, though, if he wants to dive right in, Path of Radiance is a truly wonderful game.

Path of Radiance is my personal favourite Fire Emblem.ITS SO GOOD.

And not a bad place for a newbie, I think it was my first SRPG.

You people are cruel.

You can't get FE:PoR for less than 100 bucks...

and since last I checked it wasn't on Virtual Console

good luck with all that

^This, and that's not also counting the need for a Gamecube. Radiant Dawn is pretty hard to come by as well.

I'd recommend Fire Emblem 7 (aka 'Fire Emblem' no subtitle) instead since its also one of the old school ones, has a fairly involved tutorial, and can be played through Virtual Console. Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones is even easier than 7 but you don't get the tutorial.

Of course this is all assuming that the OP wants to play games where you can't ship virtually everybody and fight armies with a hoard of Brides or Maids.
In my vision, I see that one of us is going to KO the other.

I'm with you. I prefer FFT:A to FFT.

this does not compute with me

FFT: A is more or less unplayable (at least if you like having fun)
