Fighting Games
« on: May 11, 2017, 07:59:01 AM »
So, we are about to experience a deluge of games in this genre, Injustice 2(5/16), Tekken 7(6/2), Guilty Gear Rev2(5/26) and Marvel vs Capcom:Infinite(9/19). Thought I would make a general fighting games thread to gauge interest. We've been getting tournaments almost every weekend these days too and Evolution 2017 draws close.

A big one if people have an interest in seeing what high level Street Fighter 5 looks like is E-league as it's actually being broadcast on TBS though at the 10pm Eastern slot. The soonest one is tomorrow 5/12, starts on stream/the league site early in the afternoon and then the finals will be aired on TBS. If you watch through their site they have some promotions to earn some fight money too.

Anyways, if people have an interest in learning/jumping into the genre or just playing casuals, I probably will get most of these games. Just message me somewhere or post in this thread.

Tekken 7 is day 1 for me. Been a fan since 2, play it all the time. Kuma is favorite, followed closely by Paul, then Xiaoyu and Nina.

I'm very curious about Tekken 7's Story Mode.  Fighting games always have such fascinating characters and yet often do so little with them.  Tekken 6's Scenario Campaign mode addressed this wonderfully and is probably my favorite mode in any fighting game ever.

@Agent D. - Kuma and Nina are insufferable, but Paul and Xiaoyu are great!  Seems like you don't much like anyone introduced in later games, though.  I'm a pretty big fan of Alisa, myself.

I grew up loving fighting games (including the more obscure titles, like Clay Fighter; Killer Instinct; Eternal Champions; Primal Rage; etc.), although I've almost always played them by myself. Well, aside from playing the shit out of the first two Mortal Kombats with my brother in the early 90s. Street Fighter Alpha 3 remains my favorite of all time.

I am rather excited for Tekken 7. It's going to look so good on my PC. I still play Tag 2 regularly. Bob and Hwoarang are my favorite characters, and I'm very pleased Bob was added in Fated Retribution (as well as Akuma!). I would like to try SFV, but I'm not a fan of the way Capcom's has been handling that game...

Alisa isn't bad, but I hate her moveset. Feng Wei was fun, but I find him somewhat predictable in use, generally makes lame. Tekken 6 and TTT2, I tried using Kazuya more, but I just preferred going back to Paul after...though I should admit, Jack has always been my last "go to" character when I just felt like messing around. He's fun to do stupid shit with, people just don't expect...much like many peoole don't expect Kuma or Panda to do a Demon uppercut and follow up with Fatal Wind to scare/confuse/kill them.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 remains my favorite of all time.

That game's World Tour mode was my favorite until T6's Scenario Campaign.  And honestly, I put much more time into it than SC.  Alpha 3 was amazing and Charlie is the best.

Honda for days. Backup Guile and Ken, maybe Zangief if I have a well used controller.

I've been a big fan of Fighting games ever since I found an old Neo Geo arcade machine at a hotel in Montreal, with KOF '94 being the game I spent about $3 worth of quarters on. (I never did beat the Girls Team) Since then, I've gotten into Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, Marvel Vs., Darkstalkers, Fatal Fury, Blazblue, Tekken, DOA, Soul Calibur, and even more obscure ones, like Rival Schools & Rage of the Dragon, Matrimelee, and some newer ones like Under Night In-Birth.

Actually, I was thinking about it earlier, and I seem to have a hard time thinking of games I've tried that I didn't enjoy to some extent. I know I had trouble getting into Arcana Hearts 3 (I thought it felt really floaty compared to the first Arcana Hearts game), but I still enjoyed it once I got used to it. Marvel Vs Capcom 1 & 2 also aren't that fun for me, they're too unbalanced & Chaotic for my tastes. Same with Melty Blood: Act Cadenza, as well as party fighters like Super Smash Bros. I can still enjoy a few rounds here & there, though, so long as I'm in the right mood.

Granted, I never try to get good at any of them, I mostly just try to see how far I can get in Arcade Mode on multiple difficulties and with multiple characters. Which totally works for a guy like me, who never takes anything seriously. They're the perfect "pick up & play" games, which offsets long RPGs & action/adventure games, which have so many things to keep up with, it can become a little overwhelming at times.

...Well, I guess I've never gotten into any Western Fighting game, now that I think about it. But I mostly figure that's because the ones I've played are blatantly awful, like the early Mortal Kombat games, and Skullgirls.

Oh man.  I miss that game so much.

An offbeat title I forgot to mention was Tobal No. 1. I enjoyed that shit. Being 'Murican, I never got the chance to play part deux, unfortunately...

most of my time in Tekken 6 was just messing around in that adventure mode that you earned costume pieces in. I don't play Tekken too seriously but I will say that they generally give a good amount of single player content. Same with Netherrealms, the armor/cosmetics system in Injustice 2 seems like it has a lot of potential.

As for Rival Schools, Street Fighter 5 did have a new beach stage relatively recently with a bunch of Rival School characters in the background. And it is a popular theory that one of the Season 2 SF 5 characters is gonna be from Rival Schools.

Out of all the incoming games, I'm kinda worried about Marvel vs Capcom Infinite since it's coming out so soon, and I'm not a big fan of the art style so far. But the quality of that game literally doesn't matter. it's Marvel ,Marvel is big right now in popular culture=that game is going to sell gangbusters

Oh and E league for SF 5 is starting in about an hour if people care to watch it.

MVC: Infinite is a game I'll probably skip on launch, since...first iteration fighting games have never been worth my time so far, and that goes double for Capcom games. Ultimate MVC3 is the only "upgrade" of an MVC title that I know of, but it's utterly fantastic because of it.

That's the Scenario Campaign mode I mentioned!  It's so good!  Did you ever play through it with Dragunov?  Alicia's interactions with him get progressively funnier and funnier as you go through each stage.  So awesome.

it was fun playing around with costume pieces and stuff in tekken 6, hopefully they'll have something like that in 7. Watched some of the injustice 2 story and man, they really improved the character models. They're able to convey actual human emotions now. Seriously though, the facial expression tech is amazing, which is strange since the animation for Injustice 1 was an abomination.
