It's a type of RPG that was developed in Japan. I'd call that a JRPG.

Let's not do this.

Do what? State something as plainly as I see it?

Whether an RPG was made in Japan or not does not determined whether it's a JRPG.  I thought this was well-established?  Or am I totally wrong?

Established by who, Arvis? Some sort of official global genre authority? I don't subscribe to that overly meticulous geek crap. Not trying to offend anyone, but sweating such minute details that almost always come down to a matter of opinion between argumentative ding dongs is not my thing.

Depends on the community, I guess? Though I find it a very vague term when it's used like that. Where do you draw the line? Old school-style dungeon crawlers? Roguelikes? All those very anime looking games that do let you control a character that speaks in dialogue choices?

Which reminds me, it's been years since I actually used that term. I usually just say RPG.

FWIW Dark Souls is a WRPG developed in Japan.

So why is ok for that to work one way across the pacific but not the other?

To rewrite a quote from whomever it was who said this of porn: "I cannot tell you what a JRPG is, but I know it when I see it."

It totally works the other way.  See: Cosmic Star Heroine.

I love this sentence so much that I don't even remember what we were talking about.

MMmmm.. PC bait. *NOM NOM*

Personally, I have no problems having double standards in a case like this. I'm not actively persecuting anyone, and I really don't think too much about offending overly sensitive people that I don't know, anyway. I like to keep life simple, because I sure as shit have enough to worry about as it is.

I had (mistakenly?) assumed you were calling me out for having a double standard. Were you speaking in a general sense? If so, disregard my pompous mini tirade. And the answer is because the world's various populations are also riddled with double standards.

Yeah, this Jrpg/Wrpg nonsense needs to be ended. They aren't styles of rpgs, and how is it western is even a description of a role playing game. Action, turn based, strategy, tactical...these are types of rpgs. Cultural influence doesn't describe the rpg's play style. We don't have japanese platformers or western action games. Tetris isn't a russian puzzle game (actually I think it's a russian life simulator, nyuk nyuk).

I'm running with this as personal opinion, don't take it like I'm trying to change the world or anything.

A) WRPGs and JRPGs are absolutely a non-arbitrary distinction based solely on the style of game (not their dev location).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Western_role-playing_video_games

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Eastern_role-playing_video_games

along the lines of distinguishing between horizontal and vertical shmups.

B) I wasn't trying to call out not-natros-anymore specifically. we cool.

Wait, that's a thing?  I thought a shmup was a shmup.

^ vert shmup is top down

a la DoDonPachi/most bullet hells

hori is side view

a la Darius/R-Type/Gradius

the camera orientation completely changes how you approach the game.

^ I definitely prefer the horizontal type, although I'm cool with hybrids, such as Life Force.
