Grandia 1 and 2 are coming to the Switch

https://gematsu.com/2018/08/grandia-grandia-ii-hd-remaster-announced-for-switch-grandia-hd-remaster-announced-for-pc

They said "this winter" so who knows when that is and when the NA release date will be.
I avoid online multiplayer because my brain still works.

Obligatory "we have a front page" post: http://www.rpgfan.com/news/2018/8080.html

In all seriousness, I'm curious as to how they'll handle the updating of Grandia.  That game is old enough to drink and definitely needs some serious shine and polish.  I also wonder if they'll redub the English voices and freshen up the localization.

I hope they do a better job of porting Grandia 2 to the Switch than the PS2 port job was.

Edit: But the real news of the day is the Sega Ages port of Phantasy Star 1. Automapping ftw.

Is this the PS2 remake or just a gussied up port of the original?

having bothered to actually read the link, I am disappoint.

I'm not. All I wanted was the original with more explanations and automapping. Which this has, plus other bonus features. If it ever gets localized, I'd get it in a heartbeat and marathon that sucker.

As for Grandia 1 & 2, I'll definitely get the Switch version at some point, whenever I get one of those. I have versions of both games, though, so I might wait for a sale.

Grandia II Anniversary Edition seemed to be a decent enough port for PC: http://www.rpgfan.com/reviews/Grandia_II_Anniversary_Edition/index.html

I'm still curious as to how they'll gussy up Grandia 1.

And, yes, Phantasy Star with auto-mapping is a win.  Those of us old enough to have played the original back in the day are certainly aware of having used copious amounts of graph paper to map out dungeons.

I recall that big hulking knight who joins Justin's party always sounded like he had a stuffy nose.  I mean, wow.  Bad voice acting is one thing, but putting in a voice actor who clearly has a cold...

I don't think there's any argument that the Grandia series has one of the best turn-based battle systems in the genre.  I also think there's little argument that the series has some of the coolest battle and boss music themes.

Still, Grandia 1's localization has a TON of room for improvement.

I also hope in the first Grandia they make the compass more useful (like in Grandia II), since I found it easy to get lost in dungeons at times, and to forget whether the compass was pointing forward or backward. Maybe ditch the limited inventory too. It's okay to limit the number items characters can bring into battle, so long as they don't force you to choose between what to keep and dispose of (like the Dragon Quest games with a sack into which to put excess items).
