http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiH_yDpyRDUThis is one of my favorite "love to hate" YouTube vids. It's of Dream Theater and guests covering Pantera's Cemetary Gates.
James LaBrie's vocals were wussy and whiny sounding and he couldn't harmonize AT ALL with any of the guest vocalists.
Burton C. Bell's (of Fear Factory) vocal was atrocious.
John Petrucci was pretty much on point... but he had to have Jordan Rudess do the pinch harmonic squeals on his synthesizer. Weak. Though John Petrucci is one of the best guitarists alive today, his not doing the pinch harmonic squeals proved that Dime was an absolute master Yoda-esque guitar guru. Nobody could do pinch harmonics like Dime.
Dave Mustaine absolutely butchered the solo. That was a total trainwreck. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy.
The best part of the whole thing was Russell Allen's (of Symphony X) vocal bit. He proved that among prog metal vocalists, he is in a league of his own. He should've sung the whole thing instead of LaBrie. I think Symph X would have done a much better job than Dream Theater did.
I have much love and respect for Dream Theater (they're one of my favorite bands), but they should think their covers through a bit more. This was pretty bad. Almost as bad, if not worse, than their Master of Puppets cover (LaBrie is a skilled singer, but his vocal style just isn't suited to traditional metal.)
