Cucumber soda? Pepsi Cucumber hits Japanese stores
Japanese are staying cool as a cucumber this summer with "Pepsi Ice Cucumber" -- a new soda based on the crisp green gourd.

The soft drink, which hit stores here on Tuesday, doesn't actually have any cucumber in it -- but has been artificially flavored to resemble "the refreshing taste of a fresh cucumber," said Aya Takemoto, spokeswoman of Japan's Pepsi distributor, Suntory Ltd.

"We wanted a flavor that makes people think of keeping cool in the summer heat," Takemoto said. "We thought the cucumber was just perfect."

The mint-colored soda is on sale just for the summer and only in Japan, Takemoto said. She said initial sales were brisk, and Suntory aims to sell 200,000 cases over the next three months.

Pepsi trails behind industry leaders Coca Cola (Japan) Company, with about 15 percent of the Japanese cola market, and also faces stiff competition from non-fizzy bottled drinks like green tea and coffee, which are popular here.

Suntory said it sold 20.5 million cases of Pepsi brand drinks in 2006, including its popular Pepsi NEX zero-calorie soda. (AP)

Well, in the good ol' US of A we have that turkey flavored soda during Thanksgiving.  Oh, and Dr. Brown's makes that "Cel-Ray" celery flavored soda.  That's a weird soda.

I'm almost convinced the Japanese do not in fact have any sense of taste. That turkey thing's kinda a gag, like lolipops with bugs in them, but this is SERIOUS.

On a similar note, Pizza Hut's Japanese site. I'm not sure what some of the crap is on some of those pizzas, and where the hell's the plain ol' Pepperoni?

And Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray soda isn't serious?  That's a legitimate soda sold year-round not as a gag (though it does make some people gag.  I personally kinda like it in a weird way.)

I'd have to watch a whole lotta anime before I could rationalize corn and tuna pizza.

Well, you never know about these things. Most people I know thought green tea ice cream would taste like crap and that turned out great. It's just so easy to mistake wasabi for green tea ice cream...

Pepsi has been releasing a lot of insane gross flavors recently, even here. I swear I saw a carmel flavored Pepsi the other day.

that would be gross if carmel wasn't already one of the key flavourings for cola.

It still can be. Overkill and all that.

And Ash has a point. Just look at Haiwaiian Pizza.

I remember Pepsi Blue. Which I liked. No one else did though, apparently. :(

Man I wish they would bring it back.
