Well, there wasn't that much of a difference in length of time. FF6 and FF7 was a 3 year gap, CT and CC was a 4 year gap.

But, yes, CT was an ATB system (wasn't it even called that?) Xenogears was basically like ATB set to "wait" mode. CC was a bit different still... but alas, that was one of those few "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" times where I actually agree with the axiom.
