BoF was fun. You know, for having no actual story.
Ryu: *Does something*
Bo: *Shows up* Hey, I'm joining you cause I hate the bad guys too!
Ryu: *Wanders around the map looking for apples*

What is this Earth Key of which you speak? I don't remember getting an overpowered item early on in the game and searching the FAQs for the game don't reveal anything called Earth Key.
And I don't remember DW2 having much of a strategy. Main character attacks, the princess casts an attack spell or occasionally a disabling spell, and the other prince attacks and heals when appropriate. At least with BoF, you could change your party up some.

Well, in the item menu its actually listed as the E.Key, I assumed that stood for "Earth" as every time you use it in battle, it causes an Earthquake which results in an automatic 30 HP of damage to all enemies (even flying enemies).
I've been using it in nearly every battle since the moment I got it (which is very early in the game, before Ryu even meets Nina), so I'm pretty sure I didn't just imagine it.

This is still more strategy than I found in BoF.

Nah, Breath of Fire doesn't really get any better as the hours go by. But, for the time, it was easily one of the best RPGs out there. Even though Breath of Fire II, and all of the other BoF's, out do BoF1 in everyway, BoF1 still has my favorite battle system out of all of them. Mainly because...I don't know why. XD

I thought IV had one of the most well done characterizations of any antagonists in gaming.

I seem to remember the situation was that Capcom made the game, Square was only involved with the US release because Capcom thought it would sell better if Square's name was on it.
I'm callin bullshit on that one.
Yea, Capcom had Square's help with creating the first BoF. I'm not exactly certain, but I believe Capcom enlisted Square's help to give Capcom a presence in the RPG genre in the early 90s. They just didn't have any ideas themselves for an RPG, I suppose. As to how much of the game was developed by either party I have no clue. I'd probably have to hunt down a booklet or see the credits and I'm up to neither task.

I'm pretty sure Capcom developed the game completely themselves, and just had Square publish in the US. Unless someone can supply concrete proof that Square was involved in the development, I'm just going to attribute it to confusion due to them releasing the game in the US. :P
Hmmm. Will look at Mobygames later.
Edit: Took a look, and the closest I found was that Yoko Shimomura was one of the musical composers. However, there's a lot of nicknames used so that makes it harder to properly evaluate; I'm just going to assume Square only localized it. If anyone wants to look,

With the release of the
Complete
Works artbook (which is fantastic, btw), I can't help but wonder if the series is done. Even though it unlike Capcom to discontinue a series.... how many rockman titles are there now?

They did a complete collection of OSTs for MMX1-6, yet they promptly went on to make 7. I doubt they're done with it, but I think they decided it was worth putting on the back burner for awhile after 5.

Complete Works (the recent artbook with all five Ryu's on the cover) implies "finished" in a sense. So I wonder if it means they're "finished" with the BoF series. I haven't heard it being the most profitable of capcoms things.
Still, jsut about every game capcom releases gets a sequel.

If they stop making BoFs, I'm happy. This is Capcom. If they make any more they'll drive the series for all it's worth until it becomes nothing but a pile of mediocrity. Thanks, but no thanks.

Mmm...can't really agree. DMC3 (from what I've heard) has been a great comeback to the series. Final Fantasy
12
(on the not of draggin titles out) has recieved only great reviews. I see what you mean, it just can't be applied to everything. Personally, I'd love to see more Breath of Fires, so I'm staying optimistic on the subject.

I want a new BOF as well. As much as I really liked Dragon Quarter, I want to see a traditional BOF though.
