Whoa! Triple post. Sorry, Eds, but I just like them as their own post.
Doctor Zhivago -
Another check mark off the list with this one. This was a heck of a movie. Not necessarily in greatness overall, but in material and scope.
I mostly came away with a bit of sadness over the plight of the Russian people and what they had to go through for so many years.
At the core of it, this is the story of Yuri the chea...I mean, the Doctor, and his trials and tribulations through life. This includes falling in love with two different women, writing poetry, and getting dragged along with the army as a Medical officer.
The movie definitely has some pacing issues, as well as some odd edits here and there. Despite it's length, it also seemed to be missing scenes that would have explained better what was going on.
I didn't like the soundtrack at all. There was a couple times it really bothered me, especially when, during supposedly quiet and emotional scenes, the music would suddenly soar in counterpoint. I get what they we're going for, but it didn't work for me.
And let's be honest here. Is there really ever a choice to be made between a brunette and a blonde? The brunette wins every time. Especially considering neither one of them really seems to have much of a life outside of being attached to Yuri. I know this is his story, but the movie is over 3 hours long! They could have given the women, especially Tonya, a bit more characterization.
Despite my grumbles, it IS a good movie. Just not the amazing classic I was expecting.
