I think I'll take that as a compliment.
Thanks!
Man, I wonder when people actually stopped referring to them as "talkies". Hmm.

It's not a compliment, or a put-down.

Just a cool thing I made when I imagined what Grim's movie review show set would look like.

Sven!
Yeah, I've been watching him for years. I've seen tons of great, and not so great, horror movies because of him. He's had some health issues, recently, so I'm not so sure how regular new episodes are, but if you're new to the show, then enjoy.

A Very Long Engagement -
They should have just called it A Very Long Movie. That's pretty much how it felt. It's not bad, by any means, just slow. Not a whole heck of a lot happens here.
The basic premise is of a grieving widow(fiance, actually) who has apparently lost her soon-to-be husband in the war. She refuses to accept his death, and proceeds to investigate  the scenario surrounding it.. This is the whole movie. Her meet ups with long lost soldiers, girlfriends, etc. to try and put the pieces together.
Audrey Tautou is wonderful as always. The movie is really hers. She plays determined rather well.
All the other actors were fine, but particularly memorable.
The movie is beautiful to look at. The cinematography is stunning. The beautiful French cottages that these people live in are freakin; perfect. I want one.
This really is a good movie, but it's not for everyone. There's a few war scenes, but it's mostly quiet drama. Unless your a Tautou fan, you could probably skip it.

The Raven -
This was not good. Not even from a "bad" horror movie standpoint. The marvelous play my wife and I saw in October puts this Hollywood production to shame. The man playing Edgar Allen Poe in that Puts John Cusack to shame.
For starters, John Cusack really comes across as the wrong choice to play Poe. I get that they were going for a more "realistic" portrayal of the man, but he couldn't even get the accent right. Was Poe really this much of an arrogant, drunken, jerk? I don't know. But it sure as heck doesn't make for a good movie character.
The story is all over the place, and rarely makes any sense. This is a bummer, because I love a good horror mystery along the lines of Seven.
The movie looked appropriately dark and dreary, but that's about the only positive I can come up with. Stay away from this one.

Whoa! Triple post. Sorry, Eds, but I just like them as their own post.

Doctor Zhivago -
Another check mark off the list with this one. This was a heck of a movie. Not necessarily in greatness overall, but in material and scope.
I mostly came away with a bit of sadness over the plight of the Russian people and what they had to go through for so many years.
At the core of it, this is the story of Yuri the chea...I mean, the Doctor, and his trials and tribulations through life. This includes falling in love with two different women, writing poetry, and getting dragged along with the army as a Medical officer.
The movie definitely has some pacing issues, as well as some odd edits here and there. Despite it's length, it also seemed to be missing scenes that would have explained better what was going on.
I didn't like the soundtrack at all. There was a couple times it really bothered me, especially when, during supposedly quiet and emotional scenes, the music would suddenly soar in counterpoint. I get what they we're going for, but it didn't work for me.
And let's be honest here. Is there really ever a choice to be made between a brunette and a blonde? The brunette wins every time. Especially considering neither one of them really seems to have much of a life outside of being attached to Yuri. I know this is his story, but the movie is over 3 hours long! They could have given the women, especially Tonya, a bit more characterization.
Despite my grumbles, it IS a good movie. Just not the amazing classic I was expecting.

Have any of you fine feathered friends seen American Movie?

It's a great quirky doc about a guy in Milwaukee who's trying to make a "classic american movie"

He's a complete bum and does nothing but drain from his friends and family. Amazing and depressing

I'm not big on docs. Even if it were a subject that interests me, I would rather be watching a "normal" movie. Considering I'm generally quite open to seeing any genre of movie, I should rectify this. I think the last one I saw was the Super-sized one with the one guy. Yup.

It didn't seem that close-minded to me, he said he wanted to change that about himself.

Exactly, Star. I recognize the problem, and I want to fix it. It's just never been a focus before. Nowadays I am very open to EVERY genre of movie, if it's supposed to be good. Docs not excluded. Like how Beasts of the Southern Wild is now at the top of me queue, after getting nominated for best picture.
I can certainly be close-minded, but that isn't the case here.
