Beasts of the Southern Wild -
I put this in my queue purely based on it garnering good reviews, and winning some awards. Heck, I never even read what it was about, or saw a trailer beforehand. This is not what I was expecting. It's not a bad movie, but I can't say I liked it much. It's a simple story about some crazy holdouts who live in a flood prone area waaaaay down South. They seem to enjoy themselves from time to time, but mostly it looks like a miserable living. The story mainly centers on a young girl, with a nutty Father(Mom MIA), and an overactive imagination. When the inevitable flooding happens, I couldn't help but shake my head at the hardheaded stupidity of these people. The movie wants us to see them as courageous rebels in defiance of the government(and the world!), but I just saw morons. I don't think there is anyone I would recommend this to unless you are like me, and can't help but be curious about ALL well-reviewed films, regardless of subject or genre.
The very definition of DARK comedy. It's going along fine, being all funny and stuff, then takes a left turn into Darkandtwistedville. I felt awful for laughing at what was going on, and even got to the point of not finding things all that funny anymore. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'm keeping it vague. The basic gist is that a couple goes on a camper tour through the country to visit numerous sites of interest. Funny and disturbing things ensue. Watch at your own risk.
