American Hustle -
I had a very hard time getting into this movie. I'm really not fond of 70's anything, so I was shellshocked from the start. Yes, I knew it was a 70s based movie, but it still throws so much at you so quickly, that it takes a minute to become part of it's world. I'll give the movie credit for that. It creates a very convincing time and place. Almost to the point of satire, which made me wonder if that was the point. Some of these characters are so outlandish that they could have been pulled out of a SNL skit. So is the movie in love with the time and it's people, or standing outside mocking it?
The story is the best part, and what made this is all work. very clever.
Christian Bale stood out most among the cast for completely disappearing into his role. he was amazing.
Amy Adams plays very much against type, and was great. her wardrobe assistant(or whoever) deserves an award for those amazing dresses she was in. damn. And speaking of damn, Jennifer Lawrence looked fantastic as well. Her role wasn't that great, and terribly based on stereotypes, but the body on that girl. Wow.
I didn't much like Bradley Cooper in this. He plays himself, except in a 70s costume.
I can understand why this would get the praise and nominations that it did, but I still don't see it as a Best Picture type movie. It just felt like it was trying a bit too hard, and crossed the line into absurd. Still a good movie, just not what they were hoping we all would see it as.
