This defies all explanation. It's got to be the most in-depth easter egg I've ever seen. Boatloads of win for this one. I actually want to plug in the SNES and start a new game of Super Mario World just to try this out.

Yea, unless the Japanese version is different, there isn't a pipe right there. It's an underground level on the American game. But that's a moot point after Eusis's post.
