The history of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is now so complicated that every time I tell it I contradict myself, and whenever I do get it right I'm misquoted. So the publication of this omnibus edition seemed like a good opportunity to set the record straight--or at least firmly crooked.

So apparently, because Qwest wasn't too keen on going along with warrantless wiretapping, the U.S. government withdrew contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

So what's the shock?

This happened in February of 2001. That's over half a year BEFORE the 9/11 attacks that this administration uses as its reason for the wiretapping program being in place.

What the hell?
