So I got my ticket reserved to fly back to Canada today, and when I got the printout emailed to me with the details, I noticed the following...

"***Tax is included airport tax, fuel surcharge, and war insurance"

WHAT????? So now I'm being charged for the Iraq war? On a CANADIAN flight??

When I asked for details, the response was "Every airline charge to every passenger to pay for war insurance since 9.11 terror. And they said it is for security of air flight. You may can check on internet. "

Anyone else heard of this? Sounds pretty rubbish to me.

Sounds like shit, mate.  Especially since Yankee wars are but a pittance for us.  How much was the tax?  If it's anything like other taxes for flying, it's, like, 80 bucks.

Is it just for flying between Canadia and Yankeeville?

I'd shit bricks, mortar, and construction blueprints if I got charged for such nonsense next time I head over to the UK.

It's for flying from S. Korea to Canada. And not via the States either.

Here's some more info on war insurance.

It was news to me, but it looks like a sad necessity these days.  It appears to cover expenses to the airlines caused by sabotage, war, hijackings, etc.  So it's not specifically related to Mr. Bush's daddy issues.

Yes, but that still doesn't explain why I'm paying for it on a Canadian flight on a Canadian airline.

I don't doubt that "war tax" can be found in flight costs of many countries' airlines.  I mean, it's not like hijacking and airplane terrorism is anything new.  Planes have probably been hijacked since they were first invented.  Regardless of whether there's a war going on and whether or not you believe in it or whatever, airplane hijackings will always have a chance of happening.

And if it's something like 80 bucks, isn't that just a drop in the bucket when you're paying $1000 or more for an across-the-world flight?  If said war tax was $500 or something, then I'd say that's steep.

Why not? Canadian flights can't be hijacked?

I'd love to see Snakes on a Plane with the Wright Brothers as a silent film.

"Odds bodkins, Wilbur!  There appears to be a bloody snake on our bloody airplane!"

"Wait a few seconds, Orville, and I'll pick it off when you land."

(Never realized how tough it'd be to figure out 1900s swear words!  And I still didn't get it right!)

War Tax is on the charge for my Hong Kong to Taiwan ticket, as well. THe thing is, after the 9/11 thing, the ENTIRE WORLD has been scared shitless and are afraid of being plane-jacked at some point, which is why we have need for all these security checks, taxes, etc.

It's a sad state of affairs, but I'd rather go through some inconveniences and pay an extra $80 than be blown to smithereens.

The thing I'm most surprised about is that I haven't heard about it before now.
