The Cat Returns - I'm trying to see more of the Ghibli films, and my friend bought a load of them so I'm of course taking advantage :P I really enjoyed this. Certainly more lightweight than, say, Spirited Away, but it had the same humour and visual flare, and the endearing characters. Tim Curry as a fat deranged cat king is pure gold. Thumbs up.

The 40 Year Old Virgin - Hadn't seen it since the cinema, still good stuff.

I went out and saw The Illusionist. I must say that I really liked it. Edward Norton rocks, what can I say?

You could say he's one of the most talented actors in Hollywood who's under the age of 40....cept for maybe Christian Bale or Phillip Seymore Hoffman, but he's only got a year left.

At anyrate...I'm planning on seeing that this weekend. I am stoked.

My theater teacher saw Norton in a high school play. He still thinks he's a great actor. Norton has this ability to create a character that is different each time yet still maintains a little bit of his own attitude and perspective.

Saw Angles in America (the HBO version). It was amazing. There were some amazing performances. Plus, the writing is spectacular. I can't believe such poetry came out of one person's head.

Just watched The Science of Sleep. Amazing film. Great acting, great cinematography, great everything. Unique, interesting, captivating... but I didn't really like the ending. I guess it made sense in the context of the film, but it doesn't resolve anything besides
Code:
what Stephane wants to believe.

Maybe that's the point, though.

Just watched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Very stylish, very well acted and directed. Definitely one of last year's must-sees.

edit: The last chase scene where
Code:
Harry grabs onto the hand of a corpse some 30 feet above the ground and ends up shooting all the bad guys
was enough cool to sell the entire movie for me.

Recently I've watched...

The Omen (the new one), Invasion of the Body-Snatchers (the old, black-and-white version), The Devil Wears Prada and Tremors, on telly.

The Devil Wears Prada was actually a decent film. It wouldn't have been as enjoyable if I didn't know a liiiitle bit about fashion. Meryl Streep was excellent.

Just finished Inside Man......

I liked it. I didnt really expect to, even though I really enjoy Denzel, I absolutely hate Jodie Foster and those mainstream big budget caper movies.

Clive Owen FTW.

I watched A Knight's Tale last night, because I was bored and hadn't seen it in a while. It's an enjoyable film, still too long for it's own good though. Paul Bettany is great in it though.

Gooooddddddddddd that makes the wait for Children of Men so much harder. It's not coming out in the States until December.

That's a really good time to bring it out - near Christmas when people are already depressed! (this is sarcasm, by the way). It's lucky that Clive Owen is good, as he's in every single scene - so if you don't like him, you'll get pretty sick of him. He isn't the best actor in the film, though - I think that  goes to Chiwetel Ejiofar or Michael Caine.

Some of it was slightly weird, though... I think having some famous actors in it helped with the overall quality of the acting. They could have made it a bit shorter than 6 hours, don't you think?

And if you're wondering how I've seen it, it was on tv over here quite a while ago - June or July on More4 i think.

I just saw The Departed today.  Holy fuck it was good.  The movie is long but I never found myself looking at my watch.  There were no draggy parts at all.  The acting was great;  Leo in particular.  He hasn't been this great since Titanic (joking).  Actually I hope he gets nominated for an Oscar. Everyone go out and see it.

Edited to add:  Mark Wahlberg's character is a trip.  Love that man.

I might be making The Departed the first movie I see alone in the cinema. Still haven't broken that horrible seal!

Howl's Moving Castle - I wish I could say I loved it as much as everyone else. I certainly enjoyed it, but bloody hell was it too long. I also got the impression that after the success of Spirited Away, they were trying a little too hard to be super creative and kooky. I'll give it another watch sometime.

The play was two parts and acted as two plays. There definately was some wierdness. The fire-crotch sex scene was one. Also, the only performance I thought was weak was Emma Thompson's Angel. People kept telling me that she was supposed to represent the obvious stereotype of an Angel, but she wasn't convincing to me. Her expression was odd and her movements were awkward instead of graceful. The voice was good, though.

Oh, and I thought that the performances were just as good by those not so well known. Jeffery Wright, Justin Kirk, Mary-Louise Parker, and Patrick Wilson were all perfect.

I am personally not so big on movies these days (to each his own), but I occasionally go to the movie theater with friends and sometimes watch with my family when dad rents something. Tonight my dad rented The Click starring Adam Sandler. I personally thought his movies were lighthearted fun though it is pretty much same ol', same ol'.

Thought the idea itself was clever, but the execution was a mixed bag. There were some good moments both funn and dramatic, and things did get pretty intense later on. At the end...... it really killed off all the impact right before it, so that was annoying.

I thought it was pretty good overall. Not such a typical Sandler movie, but liked some of his old stuff better.

I liked Click, mainly for its element of surprise the last half hour of the movie.  Plus, fantastic make-up artists and CG shots... and David Hasselhoff.

Happy Accidents.
Gay title, gay plot....but the movie was actually pretty good.  Basically, Marisa Tomei plays a chick who has had a series of dud dates because theyre weird.  Then she finds this great guy but he claims to be from 2460 AD.  As I said, gay story, but the movie is actually pretty damned good (way to go independant films!! =D )

Wait...Cat Returns = Studio Ghibli? O rly?

I thought Cat Returns was directed/written by Hayao Miyazaki but decidedly NOT Studio Ghibli. It's a completely different animation studio, isn't it?

That's what's kept me from watching it up to this point. The animation looks like Hana Yori Dango...character designs make me feel nauseous.

Just went and saw this one with my wife tonight, based on a friend's recommendation. Agreed, it was freaking fantastic. Quick question cuz I blanked at the end:

Code:
who killed Matt Damon in the last scene? It was Wahlberg's character right? The Digman or Digham or whatever his name was...if that was who killed him, how did he have the info about the character to know he ought to be killed...or was it just a personal vendetta? Also, why do we never see the girl open the letter from DiCapprio? We watch her write his name on it, as though it will come up again in the film, and then it doesn't...I guess I'm just not used to Scorcese endings...

Also watched the 3 Sailor Moon movies (R, S, and SuperS) with my wife out of boredom. Made me smile. :P

The Cat Returns is Studio Ghibli, but it's not directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Rather, it's directed by Morita Hiroyuki. I never really liked it very much myself.
