Being post-Christmas and all, it's likely that we've all finished off the great bulk of our music purchases this year.  So here we are with the annual end-of-year topic:  what were your five favorite musical purchases this year?

I normally order mine in order of preference, but I can honestly say that I didn't buy one album that stood head and shoulders over the rest.  This was a great year for music and they all kicked copious ass.

My picks:

Devin Townsend - Ziltoid the Omniscient
Symphony X - Paradise Lost
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss - Raising Sand
Slough Feg - Hardworlder
Dethklok - The Dethalbum

All totally different from one another, all damn near perfect.

Ulver - Shadows of the Sun
Between the Buried and Me - Colors
Eluvium - Copia
Boris with Merzbow - Rock Dream
The Dear Hunter - Act II: The Meaning of, and All Things Regarding Ms. Leading

Every item on this list is incredible, but Shadows of the Sun completely owned everything this year.

Symphony X - Paradise Lost
Rush - Snakes and Arrows
Therion - Gothic Kabbalah
Nile - Ithyphallic
Impaled - The Last Gasp

Big letdowns: Dream Theater - Systematic Garbage, Iced Earth - Something Boring Part I, Framing Armagaydon, and Behemoth - Not Quite Demigod Part II.

Still waiting for: Bloodbath's fucking DVD.

I'd give reasons, but hey, lazy.  Plus, I haven't heard all of the albums I have wanted to that were released this year.

Styles P - Super Gangster (Extraordinary Gentleman)
The Field - From Here We Go Sublime
High on Fire - Death Is This Communion
Justice -

Pretty great year for music I would say. Had to leave a lot of stuff that I really liked off this here list :/

Britney Spears - Blackout

You mean Britney actually records music?  I always thought she was like that trainwreck Paris Hilton, just famous for being famous without really doing anything.  :P

It's funny, I can't recall too many OMG AWESOME!!! albums from 2007.  The new Symph X album was awesome and proves why those Jersey boys are prog kings so that's an OMG AWESOME!!!!  One that's good but not OMG AWESOME!!! was Ghost Opera by Kamelot.  I've committed the sin of not listening to the new Devin (for shame!) but I'm certain it's OMG AWESOME!!!!!! simply because it's Devin.  The new Paradise Lost was good and the new Radiohead is notable for it's "pay anything, even nothing, to download the album."

But all I remember are disappointments.  I think Dream Theater's on a downward spiral.  Train of Thought was okay, I hated Octavarium, and Systematic Chaos sounded more like Tool and Metallica than Dream Theater.  The one good thing about that album was that Myung's bass tone drastically improved from using a MusicMan Bongo over that Yamaha sig bass he used to have.  Another disappointment was Manticora's "The Black Circus Part II."  The first Black Circus album was brilliant and this one was, well, mediocre.

I think the most underrated album of 2007 was Nightwish's Dark Passion Play.  It was mostly regarded as suck since there's no Tarja, but I thought it was a darn good album.

Eisley - Combinations
Noriyuki Iwadare - Gyakuten Saiban Jazz Album
Mae - Singularity
Mr. J. Medeiros - Of Gods And Girls
Rilo Kiley - Under The Blacklight

Wow. I guess I'm the only person here that doesn't listen to REALLY LOUD music on a regular basis. I own a Dragon Force CD and some old Zao albums, but I guess I don't have any of the same music tastes as other people here. :P

The new This Will Destroy You album might make a late run for my top five.

Wasn't rather ripped from last year? (Meaning 2006)

And I thought the rarities collection (whose name escapes me) was 2007.

Shit, you're right. I actually meant to put the Daydream Nation Deluxe Vinyl set. The live performance of it and all those covers are awesome (they cover a Beatles song and a Neil Young song).

I know it leaked last year, but isn't that a 2008 release?
