I never understood the hype about this game.  It was cool... just not beat-the-game cool.

But "yay" I suppose.  The Virtual Console needs more goods.

Great news! 'Bout damned time! I'm probably not going to play it anytime soon, since I just beat it 2 years ago (and I usually go a bit longer between replays), but it's an amazingly good game, and it'll be nice for it to reach more people. Especially since a cartridge costs upwards $100 on eBay these days.

I never played the game when it came out, and I just can't get into it now. It just feels old.

The whole delivery system for items bugged me too.

I'll give it another change on the Wii VC though if it does come out.

Earthbound definitely has a lot going for it, though it's one of the few times I've played an RPG with the volume muted.

Yeah, the music isn't ALWAYS the greatest, but it does have it's moments. Most of the town music is really good, especially Fourside (the main theme), and it's very well arranged. Where it falls short is battle music, which, although I can understand where they're coming from, was just too weird and too repeatitive. However, every proffesional arrangement of Earthbound's music I've heard since has been TERRIBLE, and the original music remains the best since.

Yeah, when I saw Der Jermeister's post I immediately thought, "Bullshit. Fourside."

In any case, what makes Earthbound fun is its unique modern setting and stylishly weird presentation. I'll be the first to admit that it is highly overrated (but then again, what popular game isn't?) but it to this day, it's style has never been been quite emulated successfully.

With most games of the 16 bit era, the story of the game was more or less limitted to the text you got. While there are some notable examples of games trying to get away from this -- FFVI's opera scene, for instance -- to varying degrees of success, it wasn't really the norm.

In Earthbound's case, you did have the story text, but it's not just story. It's whatever it is that's beyond story or outside of story or whatever. I don't know. Earthbound's storyline is pretty simple but it's the first console RPG where the story it did have actually MEANT something and it might still be the only one.

Maybe if we're lucky, we'll see Earthbound 2 (Mother 3) hit the U.S as well. I think this is great news but I'm not exactly hyped because I still have the original cartridge and a working SNES that's like 17 years old now.

Hopefully Earthbound VC sales are high enough that they see "hey, Mother 3 would sell well if we brought it to North America!" and then they translate it!  :)
