I think RPGs is a bad genre to choose for someone just getting back into games. I'd go with an action or fighting game instead, personally.

This isn't out yet but Hunted: The Demon's Forge is coming out this summah. According to THIS it has co-op.

Hunted: The Demon's Forge is not an RPG, though.  Well, I guess there is supposed to be some sort of loot-collecting mechanic but other than that it's a straightforward 3rd person action game.

Haven't seen enough of it yet, but I bet it has some character progression and other basic RPG elements.

Huh - I just looked it up.  Didn't realize Borderlands offered local co-op (since it sounds like that's what we're shooting for).  If someone's not really into gaming, Borderlands isn't probably a good choice, though, because it's pretty FPS.
