Quite obviously due to the whole Wi-Fi thing. As for why they chose to have two "i"s though is beyond me.

I don't like the new name.  As someone on another board stated, the new name is a big fat target for toilet humour.  Can anyone say "Wii, Wii"?

I'm actually not that put off by the name. It's got a catchy thing going for it, even if it's initially silly. I'm sure the fanboys and anti-fanboys (and girls) will be laughing it up something fierce. Me? I refer you back to the X-Box and how dumb that name was. "Wii" as "We" makes a bit more damned sense. Or for that matter... What the SHIT is "Wonderswan" supposed to convey?

Addenum: The two i's are symbolic of two things. One is that "I" and "I" makes two "I's", and therefore "We" (multiples of a person). Secondly, the lowercase "i" is representative of a person. The dot on the i is a head, the stalk the body. Letters are often used as pictographs. This is no different.
