I'd like to go on record as a non-Christian who went to a Catholic school and has been to many churches in his time as saying: Holy shit, I think this is the first time I've EVER seen a Roman Catholic institution act like this.

Also: Would it have killed him to explain to THEM what he intended? Not to excuse their... being totally ridiculous about this, but it would have been the path of least resistance. Ask permission? Just maybe?
