This might sound noobish, but seeing as I've never played the first game, I'm wondering if it's any good to try or if I should just go with LA2.

I've seen LA1 being described as really boring. If LA2's a significant improvement I may look.

Just go with LA2, the story is unrelated anyway.

LA1 can unanimously be described as "offering nothing to the genre of SRPG". Aside from the little Intermissions, which were....
cute.

Despite not offering anything new and what have you, it was still an enjoyable anime style story RPG, at least for me, so I look forward to the second one. Thanks for the info!

I was a little more positive that the above posters in my review.
I imagine I will be handling the sequel review for the site.

The storyline was fun for a while. The battle system isn't anything revolutionary. It's just like any other Strategy game ever. But the storyline was interesting enough.

Which begs the question: Does a video game need to reinvent the wheel to be good and enjoyable?

No , but when a game shamelessly copy other game of the same genre ,without bringing at least a little new twist to the action that make the game experience highly unremarkable

Even if it wasn't anything special, it was enjoyable enough. I liked that you could finish the game within 20 hours, it wasn't unnecessarily drawn-out like many other RPGs. If Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy is a meal, Luminous Arc is a snack. Everyone wants a snack once in a while, right?

That's what games like Lost Winds and Space Invaders Extreme are! Sounds like something like Luminous Arc is more equivalent to a non-supersized fast food meal. Junky and if you wanna fill up isn't the best choice, but you won't be hungry either.
