I haven't seen it yet, and I don't really want to. I just kinda get too emotional during movies based on events that powerful.
Just wondering, but do you think it will be a contender for best picture by come Oscar time?

I would like to say yes....but when movies come out this early in the year the Academy almost always forgets about them.
Hopefully it's just powerful enough for them to NOT forget about it. If it gets anything, it'll probably be editing, sound, and cinematography. It's not a "best picture" type of movie.

To be perfectly honest, ever since I've heard about a United 93 movie (people were predicting it by 9/18, no doubt), it always struck me as a way of converting National Tragedy into Boxoffice Success. Maybe I should go see it, but I doubt I'd like it.
Anyway, it'll probably win some award. Most awards are completely meaningless, of course, but I'm just saying, the Academy will be deemed horribly unpatriotic if they don't give it something.

I thought the same thing about profiteering, but then I read the review on aintitcool.com, which made a very good point. So many poets, authors, musicians etc have used 9/11 in their work and made money off of it, especially authors (Michael Moore's books come to mind). Why shouldn't movies so the same?

Oh, there's no reason why they SHOULDN'T. However, I still think it's sort of lame if the soul purpose is to make money off of it.
More importantly, I can't think of any 9/11-related... artworks that have any enduring merit.
After reading a few reviews, though, it looks like the guy behind it actually knows what he's doing. One review also made it sound like he portrayed the terrorists and victims as being relatively similar. Something about the passengers beating a terrorist to death with a fire extinguisher? I sort of wanna see this now.

That's a totally great point. The terrorists did evil things, and you can hate them for it....but you cant hate them for who they are. They're portrayed as very human people....not some mindless monsters.
Great flick. If you have any interest in seeing this movie....see it now.
Oliver Stone's "World Trade Center" on the other hand....I will be skipping.

I'll try and see United 93, it's out in September here, so I'll be in London, which'll make it much easier to get to the cinema.

I really thought this was a very honorable and well executed movie. I can understand why many people may have a hard time watching it so soon, but it was an amazing movie. I'm curious to see Oliver Stone's take on it coming in August!
