All my main characters have been male.

My one older childhood friend always plays a female.  When I first asked how his character was doing, he replied "Oh she's on her period."

I'm not surprised he's nearing 30 and still completely single.

For other people, I just never assume.  A lot of people have a ton of alts (at least in WoW) so sometimes they just want a different look.

Yeah I know I always ask if I tend to strike up a friendship with anyone while im playing, so I at least sorta know whats going on.  Obviously they could still be lying, but for the most part its been the case.

Generally it depends on the art direction of the game for me. If the male characters are butt-ugly, it turns me off to playing as them for hundreds of hours (Most Western MMOs have this problem for me).
