I've already spoken about my hate of this franchise before, but this made me hate it even more. I'm just going to hide in a corner or something...

I'd argue with you but technically the problem is in that it's a
franchise
now.

Something like Tenacious D, then.
Don't see how this is any worse than Mario Bros. or Dead or Alive.

Those at least
had a god damn story
from the start. While the series does have characters and a story bullshitted for the third game this is still the same to me as making a
Tetris Movie
.
Plus your listed examples aren't very good.

What?
Mario Bros. = giant evil reptile kidnaps princess of a kingdom of mushrooms, short plumber rescues her by jumping on turtles.
Guitar Hero = assorted guitarists compete to become the best in the world and/or universe.
I think you guys took this to mean that they'd be making a movie based on the game Guitar Hero. That's not what this is; it's a movie based on the story of the game Guitar Hero, which is, frankly, a lot simpler and more straightforward than most game-to-movie adaptations.
edit:
You guys
do
realize there is a story in Guitar Hero, right?

Are you arguing FOR a fucking Guitar Hero movie?
There's technically a story in Bubble Bobble, you want to defend how awesome that'd be too?
Oh, I have a good idea, how about a Wii Sports movie. Yeah. Brilliant.

If it was up to me this idea would have never happened. How did you take that as an argument in favor of a Guitar Hero movie?
When did I say it would be awesome?
I wonder if there'll be a spin off game of the movie, like with Street Fighter.

SMB doesn't exactly have a compelling narrative, but it at least put in characters beyond "well which guy suits you best?" Admittedly Tetris might not have been the best choice (though it had a comic!) but something like, well, Mario Kart might've been more suitable.
Though this is a little silly now since your point's just that most other games that had movies made out of them weren't significantly better source material. Just that this is yet another effect of Activision buying out Red Octane for this then completely running the series into the ground.

Guitar Hero: The Movie: The Game
I can just see it now
"This is just guitar hero"
"no it isn't it's the movie version of the game of guitar hero"
"but it's still buttons and scrolling and music, I mean nothing has changed"
"ya but get this, even more people are getting rich off of this now"
"Ok but did you really need to put the entire Top Gun soundtrack on the game?"
Actually, playing Danger Zone would be awesome. I'm totally for the movie now
