Zelda II.

And if your name is Eusis or you're just an asshat, then it was probably Shadowrun back in 1993.

... Zelda II's closer than most Zeldas anyway. It has towns and levels and stuff. :P

I remember Druff, too. Dan Druff, I think. I remember you from some other boards, too.
Anyway...
I think playing Bards tale with my older brother on his commodore 64 might count.
Or how about that one adventure-like game on the Odyssey?
Vic 20, anyone?
What system was Adventure on?
Damn, I'm getting old.
I could just pretend that Phantasy Star or Dragon Warrior was first.

The first RPG that I played that I knew was an RPG was FFVI.

Technically my first RPG was Dragon Warrior for NES. But I was young then and didn't know it was an RPG. It was just a really cool game.

I also didn't know Chrono Trigger was an RPG when I played it. When I was walking on the world map I was expecting to get into random battles, but that wasn't the case. =P I thought that Magus was the end of the game too because it was such a hard battle at the time for me.I didn't even have Fire Sword or Spire at the time. I sucked at games back then.

After defeating Magus and realizing the game was ALOT longer than I thought it was, I was really shocked. I didn't know games could be that long at the time.

Being a kid was awesome.

My first RPG was Final Fantasy I for the NES.  I also didn't realize it was an RPG at the time, but I still loved it.  The only problem was that I could never get past the VERY first fight with Garland which happens about 10 minutes into the game.  I would constantly go back and try but I could never do it because I was such a little kid.  Either way, that was definitely my favorite game when I was smaller until the SNES came out.

I can't remember a time when I didn't realize those games weren't RPGs. Closest is knowing of Zelda as an Adventure game right off the bat... But I've kinda stuck to that anyway. :P

I do, however, remember a time when I thought all games were made by Nintendo.

Dragon Warrior. I was five, and I didn't know what the hell I was doing, but I enjoyed it. So did my parents. Even my grandmother!

*Waves at Druff* delayed though it may be....

Good gravy, it's been a while.  Good to see you're still around too.

My first RPG was Wizardry, with Phantasy Star being my first on a console.  Phantasy Star was what got me hooked, and I'll still pop it in and fire up the Master System every now and again.  Holds up pretty well too for an almost 20 year old game.

Wasteland, old DOS game and one of the reasons DOSbox will remain a perminant feature on my PC. Great game, it was also an inspiration for another game that remains one of my favorite games of all time: Fallout.

Wasteland got me into cRPGs, from there it was on to the AD&D titles such as Menzobarranzan and then the Ultimas. Classics.

Um... FFVI? If not, Chrono Trigger. After those two came Super Mario RPG.

I didn't really count Zelda though...

Heh, not long ago I wrote my life story of playing RPGs, but to wit:

Technically, my first RPGs were Hydlide (NES) and Dragon Wars (PC), though at the time I didn't know these were RPGs.  I later got interested in the genre due to a letter sent to Gamefan, and rented Final Fantasy 6 (SNES).  I actually hated it the first time, but then months later I rented FF4 (also SNES), and dug it.  Afterwards I rented FF6 again, and later bought the PC game Gateway to the Savage Frontier, and I was an RPG addict from then on.

Final Fantasy, Zelda, Super Mario RPG.  I don't know, take a pick.  The first to catch my attention and make me buy more RPG's was Final Fantasy VII.
