Just based on some of the songs I've heard, like Fly and Day of Peace, that stuff seems more mainstream than their stuff today, but yeah, it's just an opinion.

Fly, has a lot more substance than songs like say, Girl Rock, Love Love Love or 1 Minute 1 Second.  The sound is very mainstream, but lyrically it is quite substantial, compared to a lot of their newer stuff which is a bunch of sappy (lost) love songs.

Yeah, I agree with you their, comparing Fly to stuff like One Minute One Second, Umbrella, and One (though that's my favorite.) Stuff like Breakdown is what keeps me as a fan though.

Chuck Billy and Scott Ian performing "Silent Night" on A Very Metal Xmas is both awesome yet hysterical.  I can only imagine how the phone conversation went between Ian and Billy.  I don't know how they recorded it without laughing their asses off at how wacky this was.  Billy sounds frightening and Ian's guitar work slays.

That whole CD is full of schlocky awesome.  Dio singing "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is worth the price of admission by itself.
