I've actually seen the opposite. Most of the fans of RPG's that I know are fans of JUST RPG's, and refuse to play anything else. For years I've felt like an outcast for also liking SHMUPs and Fighters.
And everyone likes Megaman. EVERYONE.

I used to be like that (with a few exceptions, namely Smash Bros. Melee, Metroid Prime, Virtua Fighter 4, Soul Calibur II) but over the past year or so I've been branching out a lot more. I've become particularly fond of flight/space shooters (Skygunner, Ace Combat, Star Fox Assault), as well as the occasional third person action game (PN03, Lost Planet, SF Assault again). I'm even playing FPSes, which I
never
thought would happen.

I'm starting to see jewels when I close my eyes.
Polarium Advance is doing the same thing to me. <3 that game.

Maybe not, but I love it enough to make up for the rest.

I am the proud owner of Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon. I'm enjoying it so far, but damn I wish they had stuck with sprites instead of the half-assed 3D models they used. Still fun though.

Currently stabbing my hands to distract myself from the pain of trying to do any advanced SF4 combos with my XBox controller. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Problems with the D-pad? :/
I wish Sony and Microsoft would just adapt the same sort of pad as Nintendo's always used. Is there a patent Nintendo has on non-shitty D-pads or something?

I much prefer Sony's D-Pad for fighters to the SNES-style D-Pad. No argument on the 360 one sucking, though.

Yes actually! Except, technically, I think it's
had
, not has, and that's only for their specific cross shaped one. Sega and SNK both came up with great alternatives, Sony came up with a kinda dumb one, and Microsoft was on the right track until they somehow completely fucked it up on the 360.
As for fans of RPGs also liking shmups: I think most people simply have broad tastes. Especially if they're going to look beyond Final Fantasy and the latest major Bethesda/Bioware/Lionhead release.

I'm having lots of fun with Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection or whatever the hell it's called. I flew through Altered Beast and Streets of Rage 2 in around an hour and a half and I've just started a game of Shining Force. After that will be SF2 of course, followed by the Phantasy Star series. Oh, and I plan on picking up SFIV sometime today.

No, analog stick and soft triggers. I only use the d-pad for double-tapping, like when I dash.

Been playing Phantasy Star on the genesis collection.
Estimate I'm 70% through or so.
Just got the
Code:
Spaceship
and really have no idea what to do now.
Encounters are so frequent in this game and can be quite lengthy.
