Prince can play most any musical instrument better than many musicians.  He's a sick sick SICK bass player.  On his albums, it's mostly him playing all the instruments himself... and his arrangements are damn good.

One thing I know about Prince is that when he picks musicians to back him up on tours, he only picks those who he thinks are better than he is on their respective instruments.  And considering how good he really IS on multiple instruments, that's a tall order.

That's one reason I'd love to see a Prince concert.  Not just for Prince, but to see the musicians he's picked out.  I want to see the best of the best.  Okay, it helps that his live bassist Rhonda Smith is gorgeous, but holy hell she is one supremely sick bassist!

Prince is not the first name that comes to mind when people think "guitar hero" but maybe it should be.

Prince is an awesome musician.  I didn't really think of him as one until I caught a performance of his on television a while back.  He was singing one second, then he ran to one side of the stage and started beating the shit out of some drums, then he ran to the other side of the stage and played the hell out of a piano, then he jumped up and laid down this sweet solo on a Tele.

That impressed me. :P

Any recommendations for Prince albums? I recall hearing that Purple Rain was good from somewhere (I'm thinking AMG, but possibly Pitchfork put it in their top-100 of the 80s), but Id idn't get it because it seemed like sort of an obvious choice and, you know, AMG recommends everything, so if THAT'S where I heard it from...

Maybe if you compare AMG to Pitchfork, they recommend everything. Since Pitchfork isn't a real review site, I find it a strange comparison.

If AMG ever gives 5-stars to anything, it is usually universally recognized as a classic or 5-star piece of work. Other than that, they give fair reviews and actually rate the music on the music, rather than its contribution to the indie genre.

Purple Rain, since it IS recognized as a classic, is very worth picking up. Prince is amazing.

AMG album pick thing means "this is the best place to start". Didn't you think it was strange that every artist has one of these? :P

Holy shit, that was fucking amazing. He seems like an arrogant tosser, but so would I be if I could play like that!

Also, what's the name of that song? I recognise, but can't put my finger on it.

It's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", by a little band you might have heard of called The Beatles. :P
