My recommendations, in no particular order, are...
Eureka Seven. Best coming of age story I've ever seen in anime plus it has airboarding mecha. The action's definitely better than Code Geass's action (namely due to the airboarding mecha). It drags in some places though.
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. The whole point of this recommendation is the third season, but the first two seasons (13 episodes apiece) will help to make the third season even better. That said it's basically what happens when you apply the Super Robot formula to a Magical Girl anime (though the first two seasons use more of the Shonen formula instead).
The Tower of Druaga. It's my hilarious anime suggestion and it's currently in it's second season. (The best part is that it's one of the animes that Gonzo decided to post directly online i.e. you can watch it for free and not feel like a pirate).
Gurren Lagann. Big dumb action show for the sake of being a big dumb action show.
Ghost in the Shell: SAC. The first season's a bit lacking in the action department, but what it's got is good. The second season has a lot more of that sweet action. It's hard to give a brief summary of the plot though. I'll let somebody more brave than I tackle that task.
Samurai Champloo. Awesome Samurai meets Hip hop culture series with tons of action (though no mecha, robots, or otherwise). Simple plot, but the episodes go everywhere except to crap.
That's all I've got for now.

All three Full Metal Panic! series. They have a bit of everything in them.

I would personally recommend Bleach or Death Note. I really don't watch that much anime, truth be told.

I'd recommend Gunslinger Girl, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Kino's Journey, Full-Metal Panic, Gurren Lagann, To Aru Majutsu no Index, Noir, Madlax, and Darker Than Black.

I agree with Eureka Seven. That has great character development. I have Darker than Black, and I have not watched it yet. But I can't wait!
Code Geass is another one I would recommend. It is pretty popular. However, I must recommend one show that is my personal favorite so far...
Argento Soma! It has literary references to
Frankenstein
as well as others. It has gotten some bad reviews from others, but I would recommend it if you like main characters that are trying to deal with their psychological issues as well as science fiction elements.
Shakugan No Shana is nice also.

So, I'm looking for something a little lighter on the romance aspects.
I'm gonna go directly against your wishes and recommend School Rumble: the romance show where nothing goes right for anybody. Gut-busting hilarity within.

Eureka 7 was good and long enough... though good lord ...
Code:
Could they uglify their main female lead any more?
Another anime I'm watching right now is Allison & Lillia... It's really good but there is some romance(?) or attempted romance. Same deal here, boy doesn't get it in his head that girl likes him, nothing new.

That tends to happen with the romantic comedy genre. But I still find it entertaining. I mean the
Tenchi Muyo
series had me hooked for a long while, until I started broadening my tastes for anime. Good thing I did.
