The only horror movie I found truly "scary" was The Exorcist.

I'll second Alien and I guess Aliens too but that one's a streach (it turns into an action movie by the end). Though you should stay away from the rest since they kinda got really stupid after that.
As for cheesy my recommendation would be Plan 9 from Outer Space.

A Nightmare on Elm Street is one I can easily recommend.
One horor film that I order you to stay away from is the shitty 2005 remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Hah! Nice one. If we want to talk cheesy horror movies, then let us go with one that all you can do is shrug your shoulders with. That's right, I'm talkin' about... Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!

I watched Pumpkinhead a day ago, and whoever suggested that to me has scarred me for life.
Next up, the 28 Days/Weeks movies!

I can recommend one you should not watch. I had the misfortune of being subjected to "The Mother of Tears" while I was an invalid two weeks ago. I don't know why horror film fans fellate Dario Argento as much as they do; everything I've seen of his has been boring as shit, and this was by far the worst of it.
