My initial reaction was that it was a blatant cash-in, though probably not the worst of ideas since it makes Rock Band slightly more kid friendly. Then I realized this could mean Lego-styled instruments.

... I think this may be the Rock Band I'll ultimately get.

I've been thinking for a while now that they needed to branch out from just rock with this game - I love rock, but not everyone does (you know, like commies). ;)  This is a pretty silly way to do it, but I bet I'll buy it anyway.  I know I'm buying the Beatles version.

There's been some country DLC packs if that's what you mean with branching. I think a lot of other stuff would require whole new instruments though.
