Well, we needed a discussion in here, and seeing as I don't have any new beautiful paintings to show you. I'll just ask who is everyone's favorite artists.
Right now: Gary Baseman or Jeff Soto:
Baseman:
Soto:
Honorable mention: Kathleen Lolley, Tim Biskup, Jeremy Fish.
As for all time, I'd say the french impressionists.

I don't know if you only want "renowned" artists here or what, so sorry if this isn't in line with what you wanted from the thread.
I'm a big fan of anime and manga, so my favorite artists are all pretty much people who've worked in those fields. I guess my all time fave would have to be Yoshitoshi ABe, of Haibane Renmei and Serial Experiments Lain fame (click images for bigger versions):
Range Murata is another artist I really like, and he has an art style similar to ABe's:
I guess my choice of art isn't really the highbrow type. I'm not looking for art to tell me some kind of message, I only want pretty pictures to look at.

Michael Whelan is and has been for a very long time my favorite artist. There is a lot of other work out there I like, but his remains on top.

I'm a fan of Ted Nasmith. He does a lot of art based on Lord of the Rings, and it's usually great.
I also like Dali. Yes I am completely ignorant about art.

My mom is an art junkie, so I've been exposed to a lot of art. I'm not a fan of a lot of what she enjoyed, but I am kind of partial to Hieroneus Bosh and Johannes Vermeer. Bosh just loved to paint messed up things, and Vermeer's stuff is just pretty. As far as fantasy art goes I enjoy Brom, Boris Vallejo and Toni DiTerlizi

MC Escher is my favorite. There is so much brilliance in his work. I love the architecture. You might recognize "Relativity."
Another artist I like is HR Giger. His work is very dark. You might recognize his work in the movie Alien.

I can't name any artists in the same vein as the rest of you, so I'll just list some of the best comic book artists.
Sam Keith. Anyone here remember The Maxx from MTV about 10 years ago? That's him.
Frank Miller. Sin City is sexy. So isn't the Dark Knight Returns.

I admit his work is very creative, but it's waayyy to dark for me. Most of his pictures are like fat babies piled up in a wall or something.

Salvador Dali!
and also Norman Rockwell.
Jackson Pollock interests me, but not aesthetically. apparently there's a lot of weird math going on in his splatters.

It's amazing how calculated and mathematical a lot of art can be. As mentioned before, Escher comes to mind. Perhaps Mondrian.

Yes!
Hieronymus Bosch is also a favorite of mine. If anyone has seen his Triptych, The Garden of Earthly Delights (especially the Hell side), they will know why.

Alan Lee is by far my favorite artist. He did concept art and set design for the Lord of the Rings movies, and also illustrated versions of the books. He's the artist whose style I most closely try to emulate.

^One example of his work.
Another guy I like is Toiletface. You guys GOTTA check out his sculptures:

. They're sick! Satanika and the Joker are my favorites. He's just an incredible artist, and a cool guy to boot.
I always liked Norman Rockwell paintings too. They have that homey feel.

The name escapes me at the moment but I really like the guy who did the older Final Fantasy artwork. The illustrations on the manuals for games like 5 and 6....anyone know what i'm talking about?
Also, H.R. Giger is cool shit. He came up with the look for 'Alien'. I think he also did an album cover for Danzig. His art is very disturbing;)
