A question on Mass Effect *Spoilers??*

After looking for a while about any ME2 news I could find (especially after E3) I find that every article starts of with something along the lines of "Shepard is not dead." Am I missing something here? Last i checked, ME1 ended with

I'll admit that I never got round to played any of the DLC or the PC version. Could someone please bring me up to speed on what happened to make everyone think that Shepard is dead?
