There was actually an interesting TED presentation where a guy did the research and found out we've actually killed fewer people in war in the 20th century, both numerically and percentage-wise than we did in previous centuries, and that marked a trend of fewer people dying in wars over time.

That and we live longer, don't have to work as hard (physically), and have developed social institutions that allow us to do a lot of good for more people, and I'd say humanity is improving rather than being debased.
