Hey there all. I consider myself a casual RPG fan; I've played a few games and I like them, but I haven't really played enough of them to consider myself hardcore. I love RPGs because of the awesome storylines and characters, the more strategic gameplay, and the fact that I can play the same game for 20+ hours and not get bored of it.

What I'm looking for you guys to help me out with is a list of games I should play either by Rom (I apologize if Roms/Isos are not approved on this board to speak of) or disc. I have a PS2, Xbox 360, Wii, and Saturn as far as consoles go.

Games I've played already:

PSX:

FF 7, 8, 9, Tactics (Liked them all)
Chrono Cross (Fun game with tons of characters)
Legend of Legaia
Legend of Dragoon
Legend of Mana (Never beat this one)
Saga Frontier
Saga Frontier 2 (Never beat this one, got to last boss)

PS2:
FF10, 10-2, 11, 12 (Didn't finish 10-2, didn't like 12)
Dragon Quest 8 (Didn't finish)
Disgaea (Seemed cool but haven't finished, I plan to finish)
Grandia II

Wii:

Fire Emblem 9/10 (I know 9 is for GC but I played it on Wii)

Xbox 360:
Phantasy Star Universe (Didn't play for more than an hour)
Enchanted Arms (Didn't finish)
Lost Odyssey (Didn't finish)
Eternal Sonata (Didn't finish)
Infinite Undiscovery (Bought but haven't played yet)

Sega/SNES/Retro:
Shining Force 1, 2, CD, Darkness
Phantasy Star 1, 3
Sword of Vermillion
Final Fantasy 1, 4, 5, 6
Secret of Evermore
Fire Emblem 4
Illusion of Gaia

Nintendo DS/GBA:
Fire Emblem 6, 7, 8, Shadow Dragon
Valkyrie Profile Covenant of the Plume
Suikoden (Bought but haven't played yet)
Final Fantasy 3 (Didn't finish)
FF Origins
Shining Force RotDD

So that list seems big to me, but after reading the forums a bit this list is obviously pennies when compared to the wealth of RPGs a lot of you have played. So what I'm looking for is any and every RPG that is achievable for me to play. I've tried playing Japanese games and I can figure out what to do but I'd prefer to be able to enjoy the story. However, I'm not opposed to playing them.

Thanks in advance.

-D

You need to put that PS2 to better use, seriously. There are plenty of awesome PS2 RPG's that can be found in bargain bins and the used game sections for pleasant prices. Persona 3, for instance, isn't too hard to find and fits you like about RPGs. And play a Tales game or two. I recommend Tales of the Abyss (PS2), but Tales of Vesperia (Xbox360) is the most recent one and easy to find new and used.

You've played a lot of Fire Emblems, so you'll probably like other SRPG as well. Vandal Hearts (PSone) is butt ugly, but the gameplay is great. Front Mission is also a good choice if you want a SRPG with a serious storyline.

As for the retro stuff, Terranigma is awesome.

I second this.

Anyway...

Tales of Symphonia (The Wii has GameCube backwards compatibility)

Valkyrie Profile (although I believe the PS1 version is ultra rare....unless you get a Japanese copy)

Chrono Trigger (the original SNES version is said to be quite rare, so getting the DS port might be a better alternative)

Oblivion (I don't know how you feel about WRPGs, but Oblivion is awesome)

Xenogears

Secret of Mana (is available on SNES and Virtual Console)

Persona 3 & 4 (Never played the others, so I can't say anything about 1 and 2)

That is all I can think of right now.

I didn't see Mass Effect or Fallout 3 anywhere.  You're really shorting yourself if you haven't played them.  The World Ends With You is a must for the DS.  Panzer Dragoon Saga is worth checking for your Saturn too.

PDS is a pain to find, and while I'd rather avoid the whole piracy angle there that may be one game that fully justifies it. Sega seriously needs to find a way to re-release that without compromising it.

Anyways, I second each of those suggestions, but with the caveat to wait until the Game of the Year version of Fallout 3. It'll have all the DLC ($50 worth) and retail for $60 on consoles and $50 on PCs. Alternatively, if he's on a PC he should go to GOG.com and get the first two.

They're sort of guilty pleasures for me, but each installment I've put serious time into I've liked a lot, even if the characters/story can get really stupid. WA1 is probably the least so of them if you are THAT concerned about story, but WA4 and 5 will probably provide the strategic gameplay you want.

WA1 had a pretty good story I thought. Normal WA1. Not ACF.

WA2 suffered from not being as concise as WA1 and also it had a really inconsistent tone and it was like, super anime-ish, but uh... 90's anime. WA1 was more like a 70's anime.

WA1's main problem is that it has a highish encounter rate and non-boss battles aren't particularly fun, but that's pretty much every RPG ever.

WA2's inconsistent tone is like... well Lilka's prologue boss is a potato monster, basically. And WA1 had a somewhat betterish translation. WA2's other main problem is that the addition of Personal Skills doesn't really work out that well because they're mostly useless. It's still fun as hell though.
