This is probably the first time I've heard any Japanese voices from Final Fantasy X. Wow, the laughing does sound worse. Tidus sounds like a bloody bird of some sort.

The reason I bring this up is that I've seen this scene used an example of bad localization or forced acting in RPGs. But I think it's a terrible example, because it's supposed to be awkward, and it does exactly what the writer's set out do accomplish.

Imma say this... one, I agree with you. As a novelist, capturing emotions of such a strange nature is difficult to accomplish. Also, I talk shit on/about you from time to time, but you're a pretty cool dude.

That's the best imitation of a crow I've ever heard! Props to the guy!

Yeah, I was thinking similar here. Good god, at least he actually sounds like he's forcing laughter in the English version.

Anyways, I kinda wish the dub argument in this thread happened here because that is the example of the source material being to blame. You don't need to know Japanese to get a laugh, so this shows that not only that the scene is just bad no matter what, but that the dubs so hated at times may actually be the superior performances.

I was playing FFX with my girlfriend last night, and we got to the infamous laughing scene. As usually, I braced myself against the awkwardness that is that scene, but then I got to thinking. I've usually heard this scene past off as a result of bad localization, bad acting, or simply bad conceptualization. Then I realized, the scene plays out exactly the way the creators intended, and it works. It's supposed to feel extremely awkward, that's sort of the point of the scene. The characters are forcing themselves to laugh when they're really not very happy. That's not going to feel very natural. It's so absurred, in fact, that they finally break down and start laughing just because it sounds so weird.

The reason I bring this up is that I've seen this scene used an example of bad localization or forced acting in RPGs. But I think it's a terrible example, because it's supposed to be awkward, and it does exactly what the writer's set out do accomplish.

When you look at it from that perspective, it does have it's merits. Although i personally don't like that scene.

Yeah so I was bored and looking for recent pictures of Jonathan Taylor Thomas and found this:

It's like he looks EXACTLY like Wakka and Tidus.

Jonathan Taylor Thomas

And for additional putrid punnery, Tidus' voice actor is James Arnold Taylor.

I seriously thought that was supposed to be him and thought "Hey, he looks like that guy from Home Improvement!" before looking him up and seeing his only game role was Jiminy Cricket.
