The (Unofficial) RPGFan chatroom

A few of us have been mentioning it on the forums, but I'm sure at least half of the people who post now have never been there or heard of it. Liz has given the nod of approval, so I may as well explain what you need and how to reach it.
1. The client. For Windows
mIRC
is generally considered the best, when it comes to Macs however
I only know of IRCle being reliable, and I never really liked that as much as mIRC
Liz says to use Colloquy, so check that out instead. Didn't work well when I used it years ago, but they probably updated it enough since. For Linux I'm completely clueless, but I can look up information there if anyone genuinely cares.
2. The server. It's hosted on Lunarnet, which can be reached at
irc.lunarnet.org port 6667
. That's a general address, you can get more specific addresses upon connecting but that's what the admins want everyone to use, so that's what I'll post.
3. Setting up. I'm going to be lazy and just
link to mIRC's
. There's other things you can do too, like registering your nickname. You use nickserv for that, /ns help to see the commands. Questions about that are probably best asked in the room itself.
Once you sign in, join
#rpgfan
, and there you go. Hopefully that's enough for anyone that's interested to get started.
Edit: Mark set up
a Mibbit
so people can just click that and to go the room.

Good idea, Eusis. I'm trying to remember the last time we had a topic with this info. I'm thinking it's at least two boards ago. :P
Just like Eusis pointed out in the thread title, it's unofficial. As in, don't bring any drama from there here to the boards, or vice versa.

I updated the original post with a
Mibbit
link so people can join the room without getting mIRC and setting it up, thank Mark for it.
And... huh, I was going to thank for sticking it, but it's been undone. Well, thanks anyway.
Edit: Thanks for resticking! And remember to change your nicks before signing in, I'm seeing a few jump in with the default.

IRC has a use other than downloading anime? :P I might check it out, but I'm basically an IRC newbie since I haven't used it in over four years.

What times are you guys generally in there? I'd like to try joining a new IRC group, the last one I was in was boring as fuck.

That's why we're re-posting the info, in hopes people show up and conversations might actually occur. :P

It's either that or it ends up like other chatrooms where I see 20-30 people in there, and only 2-4 of them are talking. I never understood why people afk'd the second they log on. I might go on there from time to time for kicks.

I pretty much idle on it the same way I have my instant messenger idling. Whenever I jump onto the computer, I can read both past and present conversations, and jump into a conversation if one is going on. It isn't exactly like my IRC client is hogging up bandwidth or system resources on my computer.

Really, times will just kind of have to be made. I generally notice activity most in the afternoon/evening when it happens, I guess post 5 PM EST is best. This can be an advantage to using mIRC, but then having a tab hanging open isn't much of a big deal either these days.

'course there's the 5am SUDDENLY DISCUSSION sessions. I think the chatroom can serve as a pretty good medium for some in-depth conversations; it certainly was this morning. Mind you, we were too tired to take the ideas anywhere important, but it was a good chat.
Fact is that simply hanging out in the channel is key. Someone gets off on a rant or someone mentions something, and boom, conversation.

Just to add to this conversatation, I'm actually an admin to one of the lunarnet servers (I go by Lucca). If you have any questions on IRC like how to register your nick, where the server is, why you were banned (PLEASE let's pray to god no one comes to me with this problem) you can always look for me for help. :)
It's been a while since I've been on #rpgfan. I just assumed it went the way of #rpgcafe and became an idle zone. I should check it out sometime.

This is pretty much what's up. I leave IRC going at all times, and I think the last time I rebooted my computer was... five months ago. I always have this huge story to read up on at night, kind of like
spying on ten people's entire lives
... I jest, that was kinda creepy.
Anyway, this chat room has been around since like 1998 or something, maybe even before then. In other words, some regulars of these forums and the chat room have existed since the dawn of time itself. We are totally internet celebrities and you should come talk to us, especially since we have the entire fucking cast of Friends in there. Some emo dude, some music guy, some random preppy rich chick, half-redneck psychophants, some asian gook who thinks he's the incredible fucking hulk GRRRRRRRR I'M IN MY BOXERS GRRRRR I'M SO MUSCULAR AAAARGGHH HURRR shut up you fucking scrawny piece of shit, my fat italian ass will sit on you and it's done, god.
Honestly just swing by, leave IRC open, and join our bizarre secluded videogame-related discussions and random URLs to dramatic, hilarious, important, intriguing, and otherwise porn-related materials.
Also it's pretty much NC-17 in here or something. Beware.
