A note to anyone looking to get the European release:

The localization in some sections is absolutely horrible. During the later generations, the fourth and fifth specifically, you can't get through a conversation without at least one or two typos.  They aren't small typos either.  A small pet-peeve of mine is that during the later conversations, many of the lines didn't have punctuation at the end.  Sure, it's not game breaking, but sometimes they lacked a period, or sometimes they used a period instead of a question mark.  The latter is a bit confusing in itself since the localization is generally very bland and feels more like a direct translation.  Sometimes I didn't know if a character was talking to himself, someone else, or asking a question. Also, there are some events that are clearly supposed to be amusing but you end up just wondering what exactly went on because the "joke" made no sense.  Not to mention that some Gallery entries are practically unreadable.

Also, if you look at some "map" screens, you'll see something at the bottom left that says something like "First Generation" or "Second Generation."  During the Fourth generation, it says "Force Generation."  I'm honestly not sure how something this large, that you see a lot, was missed.  the Fourth generation is just where everything starts spiraling downhill;  the localization was "okay" before that.  There were typos there, but they weren't all over the place.

I wouldn't say it's as bad as Ar Tonelico 2's fourth Cosmosphere Engrish section, some of the worst localization I've seen, but "overall" I'd say it's just as bad, if not worse in some ways.

The game is very fun though, I was surprised.  Even if you didn't like Cross Edge, you may like this.  Also note that Aksys is re-translating the game.  You can compare screenshots and the Aksys version definitely flows better.  If you're thinking of getting one version and you appreciate both grammar and readability, stick to the North American release.

Edit:  Just to support my point a bit and not sound like I'm simply spouting nonsense, I found a profile entry that supports my point.  Minor spoilers follow.  Also note that Dysuana is actually "Dyshana" throughout the rest of the game.

". . .The power which carried through the five generations has grown stronger to connect with the spirit of Dysuana which is the source of this power, and now they share a part of their souls.  He begins to see the purpose of Dysuana's existence and her objective.  However, he doesn't try to question the purpose. . ."

I'm trying to think of the right way to phrase this, but I'm coming up short. So, what the hell: what's the perv-factor of this game compared to, say, Ar Tonelico or Cross Edge? The gameplay is sounding surprisingly good, but I really don't need my wife kicking my ass because I bought some sort of quasi-hentai or whatever.

I don't think it's high. The most revealing are the 'wedding night' pics, where all girls so far were decend => They were naked but under a sheet and nothing very revaling shown.
I've heard of an onsen/hot spring event in the first generation, but I haven't triggered in my first go, so I can't say if that one was pervy. I'm a girl myself and didn't consider it extremly pervy. Then again I have only tested Cross Edge for 2 days, so I can't really draw a comparison.

@Cyril: Good to know. I'm just before fourth, so it's good to know that there is a fall of quality to expect.

Thanks - having a female perspective is handy.

I probably shouldn't have added Cross Edge to the perv thing, I've been playing through it a bit more, and it settles down pretty quick after Morrigan's sequence. (How does she walk with breasts that big? Succubi must have seriously strong spines.)

Rofl yeah, and i think morrigan is ugly already, or she is just the kind of sucubus i dont like? xD anyway i dont like when they make breast stupidly big, looks pretty weird.

And i was surprised to see a girl playing it :D nice.

Ah?

Well, I do suppose the name is pretty gender-neutral ;P

Nah, seriously, it's a lot of fun. And I suppose seeing as I'm not 'breast-size'-influenced I really have no problem choosing the females either by personality, looks or 'useability' in a sense of what I want my next 'child' to be able to do.

The only thing I - as a girl - find a bit of a shame is... Well... You get boys in EACH GENERATION... Seriously, the likelyhood of that happening is... rather low.
I wouldn't have minded at least one generation as a girl and being able to choose the boy to woo ;P
Oh well. Either way you get eye-candy of three handsome males so it's no that big deal.

That and I like pretty art.

Bit off-topic question, but: Why is it so unusual for a girl to play this? *curious*

It's not unusual for a girl to play this any more than it is, say, Disgaea. I'm (a female) playing it, a female friend of mine played it.  It's one of those things people seem to believe along with "girls don't play games."

... *twitch*

Thanks, I'll stick to my not so pervy edition -.-
I'll even take the typos I've heard about in the next two generations over that.

Seriously, this kind of advertisment would definitly turn me off the game. I don't care about that (especially not being a girl) and prefer to enjoy a good story. That vid makes it seem like it only has eyecandy and fanservice and only a random plot thrown together to get it on with the ladies...

Which it is not.

I still laugh upon hearing that porno-funk music that plays during the eroge style trailer.

That article presents 0 evidence showing that said commericals resulted in lost sales.  Kind of silly considering they put it in the article title.

I thought the Agarest War trailer was hilarious.  What's even more hilarious is people's responses: there's actually morons out there that after watching the trailer now think Agarest War is a hentai game.  Really.  Even my mother, who knows 0 about games, was able to quickly deduce that the ad was simply a marketing joke.
