You know... I don't think my father would approve of me dating the undead, and you're probably too nice a zombie-pirate for me anyway. Let's just be friends instead.

There may be similar themes among all four games, kind of like how Bioshock is a 'sequel' to System Shock 2, even though it really isn't and an actual sequel is planned.

Doubtful. They've been silent for like ten years now.

Quote
Quintet itself has never expressed any links between the two series'.

Isn't the cupid in Actraiser 1 the same as the blue haired dude in Soulblagzor?

That may be the case, but I wouldn't say that constitutes a real link. :\ Cupid's kind of been every child-angel in any given game with child angels.

Except that guy looks notably different. Which either means that's some crazy speculation that's unproven, or there's an actual link there and not merely a visual homage since it wasn't a sprite/character type recycle.

I wish I could answer your question with a yes.

It hasn't been directly stated but generally assumed that the Master of Actraiser is the same as Blazer's Master in Soul Blazer. That and you're recreating the world which is the theme of the entire Blazer Quintrilogy (and really, outside of a few reoccurrences like Turbo the Dog, speaking with Flora and Fauna, the theme of rebirth, and such none of the games really have anything to do with each other).

Is Quintet making any new games?

Unfortunately, after Granstream Quintet ended up renaming themselves to something else, made one more game that bombed, then finally died a quiet death (I forget all the details but that's basically what happened).

Speaking of Quintet, they did some stuff for Atelier Iris, so they're not entirely dead

The important thing about Quintent's games -- especially SoulBlazer and Terrangima -- is that they embodied a sort of creational process.  No, you didn't have THAT much control over how the cities revived themselves. It wasn't like simcity, here, or even actraiser.

But the reward for dungeon crawling in SoulBlbazer -- and I think SB was a clearer distillation of this thing than Terranigma was -- was watching the town revive as a result of your actions. It wasn't something as nebulous and static as "plot." Your reward for dungeon crawling was a bigger world to explore and watch how it changed.

I think, in a sense, this is maybe one of the purest representations of a level of *joy* from gaming.

I'm going to go with a few cult games.

Secret of Evermore. Very underrated from what I've experienced. People always bash the premise of the game, and not the actual gameplay. This is unfortunate, because it offered a new form of customization at its time that some games did not. That, the music and the worlds were very creative.

SaGa Frontier 2. I'd say its music is the most underrated as I believe it's Hamauzu's greatest work (I'm waiting for FFXIII). But I think people have an issue with the difficulty of the battle system and broken weapons to make it less appreciative. That said, once you understand the formula, SF2 becomes a pretty straightforward game. Battle of South Moundtop is difficult, especially if you were never really paying attention to the support/attack capabilities of your troops IFF adjacent to other team members. One of my more favorite battles in any game as I was completely engrossed in Gustav's story.

Legend of Legaia. Who gives a shit about its graphics? Seriously, it had an awesome battle system and a basic enough storyline to get gamers through. Whether they liked it or not depends, but it's definitely better than it's almost Legaia 2: Dual Saga carbon copy.

Jak and Daxter. Well, I guess this wouldn't be overrated because of its later iterations, but it's something I don't see getting talked about by anyone 15+.

Edit* Infinite Undiscovery, Adam's Family Pugsley's Quest. . . . oatmeal is burning. Perhaps I'll fill in later.

I have always said that compared to SD2's elemental magic Evermore's alchemy system is simply inferior (also no multiplayer).

SFII is what got me into the SaGa series fyi.

I have no issues with the other two save for my lack of having played them.

Infinite Undiscovery is infinitely overrated.

And the last one is right up there with numbers 3 and 4.

Anyways, what does anyone think of Klonoa or the early Spyro games being underrated?

I can't knock a game for lacking multiplayer if it was never intended. I also don't see the fun in multiplayer SoE.

Spyro and Jak and Daxter were never (or not really) underrated nor undersold. They sold quite a million and its well received.
