You seriously need to study the background of rap and hip-hop. It's a different way of singing, but it is legitimate music. A lot of the mainstream stuff today has been ruined by the P Diddy school of thinking, but that doesn't describe the music as a medium. Listen to Sweatshop Union or MC Yogi and you'll see how versatile rap and hip-hop can be.
