It's the pentagram formation.  Since someone with too much time on their hands spotted this coincidental formation, there have been no fewer than two threads on the WoW forums (and supposedly at least one thread popped up on the European forum as well, but since I don't read it...) with more than 500 posts each trying to explain, in very typically bizarre and retarded fashion, this phenomenon.  The most recent thread has started on the beta forums at http://beta.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=10991537&sid=1

I wonder if anyone has followed those children all over Elwynn Forest to see if they make a Pentagram shape in the locations they stop.....hmmmm

It could be a reference to Warcraft in general, in which a group of units will stack together into a formation in the tightest format possible withing a restricted area, but will tend to respect each other's personal space.  Giving rise to a tendency for 'checkerboard' positioning.

Since the room itself is rather snug, they aren't going to have many ways of situating themselves.
