If I play a game a second time, I'll use a silly name.  Like the second time I played Persona 3, I named the guy "Studman Studman" because it was funny seeing Mitsuru say stuff like "hey Studman, do you feel like going to Tartarus tonight?"  Or in FF9, I renamed Amarant to Lips so he'd say "some call me The Flaming Lips." (Yes I am secretly 12 years old:P  And The Flaming Lips are an awesome band.)

I've named characters "I say" so that all the characters who talk to them sound like Foghorn Leghorn.

In the first DQ game I played, VIII, I named the hero Digory. I jacked it from the first Narnia book, seemed to fit the setting, and afterwords I could totally hear Trode saying it. In DQV I named my character Irulan. I usually try to pick a different name for the silent heroes, but go with default fer the personality-imbued ones.

I always put way too much thought into it. I had a lot of trouble choosing a name for the DQV hero. I wanted something that could sound cute and powerful at the same time since the character eventually gets older. I winded up picking Yupa since it sounds like a pet name but is also the name of the swordsman from Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind.
