I'm stuck babysitting my nephew tonight (thanks bitch of a sister!) and have nothing but free time.

So, an obligatory list thread.

Top 10 RPGs of the last decade, now that it's over.

Mine, in no order are:

Skies of Arcadia Legends
Shadow Hearts
SMT Nocturne
Persona 4
Suikoden III
Final Fantasy X
Xenosaga I (I have never gotten around to X3)'
Chrono Cross
Yakuza (it's a beat em up RPG)
Dragon Quest 4 DS

Yeah I know I haven't included stuff like TWEWY, Brave Story New Traveller and Dark Cloud 2. I own them but haven't gotten around to playing them yet. I was tempted to include Shadow of Destiny as it was reviewed on the site, but it's technically not an RPG.

Honourable mention to Okage for being fun and Tsugunai Atonement for trying a few different things.

Let's do this the easy way and just pick my favorite RPG from every year.
Also this isn't necessarily my idea of the BEST designed games of this era. Just the most personally meaningful.

2000 - Chrono Cross
2003 - Tales of Symphonia (Japanese release data. Whatever)
2004 - Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
2004 - Crusader Kings
2005 - Romancing Saga
2006 - Ookami
2008 - If we're allowing remakes, Quest for Glory 2 VGA
2009 - If we're including remakes. Dragon Quest 5

And uh... That makes eight.

Hrm. Well, my favorite final fantasies of the decade were 9 and 10. STALKER's been very promising so far. I don't know. My interest in RPGs has waned greatly :(

(This list would've been easier had I not gone back to replay Legend of Mana and Wizardry 8. Those two would have been easy favorites -- were I still to have liked them).

Drakengard (both)
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy X
Fire Emblem
Grandia II
Shadow Hearts Covenant
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Tales of Symphonia
Valkyria Chronicles
Xenosaga Episode III

And if Zelda counts, I'd have to make room for MM, WW, and TP.

I hate to spoil this, but... after we finish our game of the year proceedings, the staff is planning to do a "best of the decade" feature.  (I don't want us to look like we ripped off Lard's idea.) :D

I'm really tempted to tell you some stuff about the discovery process - how exactly we're remembering what was released then and such - but I'm going to save it for the feature.

Oh, and we've also talked about giving you a "worst of" list, which is always its own kind of fun.

Tales of the Abyss
Tales of Symphonia
Final Fantasy XII
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Persona 3/FES
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions
Disgaea
Disgaea 3
Valkyria Chronicles

I beat the first 8, only got to chapter 7 in VC, never played more than 5 hours of P4 (a crime, I know), and I haven't played enough (in quantity and/or time) of the other good RPGs to have an opinion.

1. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
2. Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
3. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
4. Final Fantasy X
5. Shadow Hearts
6. Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria

There are other games that would probably be here if I had played them. But these are the RPG's that stuck out to me last decade.

1. Final Fantasy IX (2000)
2. Zelda: Twilight Princess (2006)
3. Skies of Arcadia: Legends (2002)
4. Okami (2006)
5. Tales of the Abyss (2006)
6. Dragon Quest VIII (2005)
7. Suikoden V (2006)
8. Fallout 3 (2008)
9. Grandia II (2000)
10. Tales of Symphonia (2004)
* Final Fantasy X (2001)

Man, 2006 was a GREAT year. Final Fantasy XII was no slouch either, and many VP fans were made happy that year too. I find the last two years of any generation are usually the best.

There are way more then ten, and I could never narrow them down.  I'm just going to toss out a list that comes to mind.

Chrono Cross
Super Robot Taisen: OG1 & 2 (They're the same damn game)
Romancing SaGa
Okage: Shadow King
SMT: Nocturne
Suikoden 3
Suikoden 5
Baroque
Dragon Quest 8
Breath of Fire 4
Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter
Paper Mario
Fire Emblem 7
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis

And there's probably tons more that I'm missing.  And if Zelda is included, Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess easily.  See also: Dark Cloud and Rogue Galaxy.

In no particular order:

-Disgaea
-Lunar 2: Eternal Blue (does that count? If not: Etrian Odyssey)
-Valkyrie Profile
-Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana
-Odin Sphere
-Persona 4
-Fire Emblem
-Tales of the Abyss
-Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
-Wild Arms XF

Not all the best of the best, just games that stood out. For instance, I played Tales of the Abyss during summer break. 5-8 hours a day, almost two weeks in a row, during a heatwave, in a room without airco or even an electric fan. I remember having to take bathroom breaks every hour, because I drank lots of water to stay hydrated. Definitely one of the most hardcore things I ever did.

Valkyrie Profile was a game I showed to some of my friends when we were on vacation together. They quickly nicknamed it "the overkill game". Good times.

Disgaea is the game we (=the friend I just mentioned and I) would have made together if we ever made a game. It's as Nippon Ichi read or minds. They even used the penguins!

Fuck, was Majora's Mask 2000? I guess I just thought it was '99. Guess I gotta go redo my list now (naw, too lazy).
