I think they delayed it in order to collaborate it with the release of 3D TVs (3D TVs are coming Summer 2009, and GT5 was shown in 3D).

Oh and...

From what we've learned, you will be able to drive your real FT-86 around a real track -- the Nurburgring, for example -- and then remove the memory card from your car, plug it into your PS3 unit and either "watch" your lap virtually or race against yourself, as your real car appears as the "ghost car" that you battle against.

While possible, that seems a tad silly to me. 3D HDTVs will probably be very expensive at first and not many people will have them.  Spending time implementing a feature most people won't see or use doesn't seem too wise.  Sure, more people years down the road would have access to it, but I still don't buy it.

Well, the execs at sony are expecting gamers to break the ice with 3D tvs and if you want gamer's attention you need strong games.

But will gamers shell out $2500+ for a 3D tv just so GT5 looks that much better?  I'm willing to bet not.  Sure, cost of 3D will come down, but it's hard to say when.  It's hard to say i'd like to see games go 3D when devs are still struggling with screen tearing and pop-in on current gen.
